Bar-Ilan's 25th Anniversary Highlighted by Israel Mission

The celebration of the
25th anniversary of the
founding of Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity has been announced
by Phillip Stollman, global
chairman of the university's
board of trustees.
Founded primarily by
American Jews in 1955,
Bar-Ilan University has
grown from 80 students to
an enrollment of more than
10,000.
Located on a 125-acre
campus in Ramat-Gan, Is-
rael, it has five faculties —
humanities, Judaic studies,
social sciences, natural sci-
ences and law, and two
schools — social work and
education.
The anniversary will be
inaugurated with a week
of festivities on the uni-

CIA Thwarted
Attempt on Golda

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Central Intelligence
Agency (CIA) thwarted a
major assassination at-
tempt against "a head of
state of a friendly govern-
ment" by terrorists 24 hours
before it was due to be car-
ried out, Ray Cline, former
CIA deputy director, dis-
closed last week.
He declined to identify
the head of state, saying
only "it was a woman" and
that the assassination at-
tempt was made "a while
ago" in New York. It was
understood, however, that
he referred to former Israel
Premier Golda Meir who vi-
sited New York a few times
during her premiership.
A colleague of Mrs. Meir
revealed last week that the
late premier was close to
suicide during the early
stages of the Yom Kippur
War.
Veteran Mapam leader
Yaacov Hazan told a
memorial meeting for
Mrs. Meir in Tel Aviv that
she had revealed to him,
close to her death one
year ago, that she had
contemplated suicide be-
cause she could not bear
the thought of her moral
responsibility for the
pre-war unprepared-
ness.
Hazan said Mrs. Meir had
told him she fully expected
to be exonerated of any di-
rect responsibility "by any
tribunal on this earth."
Nevertheless, she could not
forgive herself for not hav-
ing followed the dictates of
her instincts rather than
the advice of her various
ministerial and military
experts.

Compatability

By EVE DISHELL
1 saw a very old man, with

scraggly gray hair and beard;
very feeble, with a furrowed and

drawn face.

He was looking down on a
very young child, actually
an infant, who had curly
hair, a cherubic face, bright
eyes and an innocent, naive
expression. His little hand
was held in the old gnarled
hand.
The venerable gentleman
was talking to the little one,
who seemed too young to
understand anything.
I wondered what these two
could possibly have in com-
mon. But when the oldster
straightened up, I saw on his
body reaching from his
shoulder to his waist, a cloth
pennant with a number on
it, 1979, and the little child
had one marked 1980!
