It has been met with virtually universal outrage for such destructive violence threatens to undermine the foundations of civilized world order, raising the specter of international anarchy and chaos typical of barbaric ages of the past. While that melodramatic violence is of a high decibel magnitude it ought not to obscure altogether the fact that a great many Ameri- cans are increasingly con- cerned over the spread of an epidemic of violence at our own doorsteps. Crosses have been burned on the lawns of black people, swastikas smeared on synagogue walls, churches and synagogues are being vandalized, innocent people are killed daily on our streets. Recently, a Brighton Beach synagogue and its sacred Torah scrolls were set on fire by an ar- sonist, sending a psycholog- ical shudder through the el- derly Jewish congregants. To their credit, Jewish and Christian leaders met a few weeks ago to develop a joint strategy with the police department to counter this savage vandalism and crime. Congressman Stephen Solarz has in- troduced legislation that would make the destruc- tion of churches and synagogues a federal crime. All that's very important, but it does not touch the un- derlying issue — how do we contain the epidemic of vio- lence and dehumanization Militants Are Ending Silence on Falashas By MOSHE RON kia,<`6 • el-pec\e<\c, • • • % (.3 N \c`ek-‘5(0.91(:),•:ctc.:;‘6 zic.wri‘,(‘‘40x e:c. o<\ 50‘6, t:0•6 `1\4` (3`' 2Y3'‘ 6\'`'N4 0. 00, 44x0e Nics\>% 50 ‘;‘`‘'N °Ni °Ie‘is4 OJt kOC •Ao\> oc`e-°k-e'Vc\ et" kft VOiiO4 2.°10 S: N eteO • • • • • • • • • 09 14K Gold Chains Fine Crystal Executive Gifts Quality Leather Items Dunhill Lighters Unusual Brass Gifts Leather Backgammon Sets Statues • Ceramics Picture Frames THE FINEST EUROPEAN QUALITY & CRAFTSMANSHIP Gold Jewelry Sold By Weight * An Investment You Wear *14 K GOLD at $ 1 Ouoce 3 Ethiopia, this matter has become more difficult.
