THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Tillie Martin,Woman of Valor
as Hadassah, Bonds Leader
The passing last Friday of
Tillie Martin is mourned by
major Jewish movements as
a serious loss to the commu-
nity.
Funeral services for Mrs.
Martin, who was ill for sev-
eral months, were held
Sunday at Ira Kaufman
Chapel, and many hundreds
joined in paying tribute to
the 63-year-old leader who
was the Woman of Valor
who inspired many in
promoting educational ac-
tivities and in efforts for
Zionism and Israel.
Mrs. Martin, as chairman
of the cultural commission
of Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
was a familiar figure and
became known to many
thousands who attended the
synagogue lectures over
which she presided.
Whatever she under-
took was accompanied
by the assurance of new
goals being aimed at and
achieved. This was true
of her presidency of the
Metropolitan Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah.
She rose in the ranks of
the women's Zionist
movement from menial
duties to leadership that
gave her status nation-
ally.
This was equally true in
her leadership in women's
ranks in State of Israel
Bonds. •
As a hostess she was su-
perb. The Martin home was
a source of inspiration for
visiting lecturers, Zionist
leaders and those in the
ranks in Detroit. Dr. and
Mrs. Martin gained high re-
spect as hosts of merit and
Tillie was always the
charming hostess.
