Festival of Lights Is Brightest When Celebrated in Jerusalem
very special significance.
I am walking near my
home in Kiryat Moshe. It is
a religious neighborhood —
but in a relaxed, non-
oppressive sort of way.
There is room here for all
kinds of Jews — the
crocheted "kipot" type form
the majority, with a few
black ones, a very few
"shtreimels" and a scatter-
ing of bare heads.

JERUSALEM
—
Through the open windows,
I can hear voices singing
"Maoz Tsur" — from quiver-
ing childish soprano to deep
baritone. The melody is the
same in every Jewish home
around the world, for this is
Hanuka, the Feast of
Lights. But there is some-
thing different about it for
me now . . . I am hearing it
in Jerusalem, and it has a
.
It is just after sunset and
on almost every window
ledge or balcony there is a
Hanukia burning. Most are
made of copper, decorated
with designs of lions, vines,
pomegranates or eagles. In
the distance, a giant men-
ora, visible all over
Jerusalem, sits atop the
Knesset. Other menorot are
illuminating the tops of
public buildings and water

towers.
Hanuka in Jerusalem
is not only a feast of light,
it involves all the senses.
There is the smell of sof-
ganyot — wonderful
jam-filled doughnuts fry-
ing in oil, and the taste of
latkes of all kinds. Chil-
dren are singing, and
showing each other their
Hanuka gelt and
dreidels.
This is Hanuka in
Jerusalem, and I can't help
contrasting it with those I
remember from Australia,
where I was born. There,
Hanuka had to compete
with "Ten shopping days to
Christmas" and giant ef-
figies of Santa Claus and
Christmas trees in the

In our time, Hanuka
signifies the struggle of the
weak against the strong,
and the few against the
many. It is very meaningful
in Israel today, which has
had to fight five wars in its
short history, always
against far greater odds.
Hanuka is a magic pot-
pourri of light and song.

But here in Jerusalem
one can celebrate it fully
and absorb the meaning of
the first Hanuka, which
happened in this very city
more than 2,000 years ago.
As with other festivals in
the cycle of the Jewish year,
Hanuka has a dual origin
— historical and seasonal.
Long before the Maccabees,
there was an established
winter festival at this time.

JERUSALEM — Rev.
Daoud S. Haddad became
the first Arab Lutheran
bishop following consecra-
tion ceremonies at the
Lutheran Church of the Re-
deemer in Jerusalem last
month.
The consecration, which
took place on Reformation
Day (honoring Martin
Luther), was attended by
Lutheran bishops from
Sweden, Finland and Ger-
many.
Bishop Haddad's consec-
ration marks a major step
for Lutherans in the Middle
East, since the senior
ecclesiastical leader had
previously been the Ger-
man propst. Rev. Jurgen
Wehrman, the newly desig-
nated propst, has been in-
stall( d as the spiritual
leader of the German-
speaking congregation, but
will serve under the new
bishop.
