Rabbi-Joshua Sperka's Commentary on Book of Job

Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka
purgued his literary contri-
butions with Scriptural re-
search and studies
exemplified in a third book.
His "Mankind on Trial: The
Book of Job" (Bloch) is an
extensively evaluative
commentary on the Bible
personality that remains an
ageless exploration of suf-
fering.
Job's sufferings as tested
in the biblical volume is
treated by Rabbi Sperka
with deep attention to tal-
mudic and other interpreta-
tions and with modern ap-
plications.
Rabbi Sperka's commen-
tary on Job is his third in a
series of biblical interpre-
tive works, the earlier ones
being "Ecclesiastes: Stories,
to Live By" and "Proverbs to
Live By." He is also the
author of "Eternal Life," a
digest of laws of mourning.

His volume on Job in-
cludes his own transla-
tion of the great book.
Each brief chapter is fol-
lowed by his commen-
tary, and in its totality it
contains the answers to
the problems posed by
the great sufferings
which tested Job's char-
acter and spirit.

Strictly traditional in his
approach, Rabbi Sperka
nevertheless utilizes anec-
dotes, proverbs and legends
to illustrate his explanatory'
text.

RABBI JOSHUA SPERKA
Dividing the 42 chapters
of the Book of Job into five
parts, Rabbi Sperka gives a
full account of Job and his
family and the agonies
entailed by him. The voice
of Job's friend Elihu is
heard in the analyses. As
Rabbi Sperka explains in
his introductory chapter:
"Part one, the prologue,
introduces Job and his fam-
ily. It describes his position
of great wealth and high
honor which is transformed
into misfortune and grave
suffering. Part two contains
the dialogue between Job
and his friends. Part three
introduces a new young
voice, that of Elihu. Part
four brings the hook to a
climax with the revelation
of G-d from the whirlwind.
Part five concludes the book
with an epilogue in prose.

The parables and anec-
dotes resorted to in the
commentary by Rabbi
Sperka will be found espe-
cially applicable to his ap-
proach to his latest study of
biblical personalities whose
agonies have become the
problem of mankind.
Rabbi Sperka credits his
wife Yetta, his son Shlomo

and his daughter Mrs.
Matthew (Judith) Clark for
assistance and advice in

"In Job, the reader will
learn five answers to the
question raised by this
book. The prologue gives
one definite answer; Job
is not being punished for
any sin whatsoever.
Job's suffering is a test of
his faith.

"The dialogue contains
three cycles of speeches of -
Job's three friends who pre-
sent the conventional theol-
ogy that suffering is the
consequence of sin.
"Job cries out in protest
that his suffering is without
cause since he believes him-
self without sin.
"Elihu suggests that suf-
fering is a form of education
and purification. G-d im-
poses suffering only after
warning and admonition
fail.

possible human com-
