Reporter, Richard F.
Shepard, caught the spirit
of it.
Shepard reported:
"Levenson waded
through the crowd, hug-
ging women who remem-
bered when be lived in
Brooklyn, men who had
heard him in the Bronx,
and proceeded to the
300-seat auditorium to
give his lunch hour
Theater-in-Hospital talk.
"It is part of a project
called Bread and Roses
being carried out by District
1199 of the National Union
of Hospital and Health Care
Employees and is designed
to bring arts, and
humanities to union mem-
bers where they work and
where they live.
"The humorist had before
him the face of New York,
an audience that was
Jewish, Italian, Irish, black,
Hispanic and who knows
what else. There were the
workers, the guards, the
porters, the administrators,
the nurses, the doctors and
there were the patients,
bent and hobbling or in
wheelchairs or barely mov-
ing wiht the aid of walkers.
"Moe Foner, the union
local's executive secretary,
introduced Mr: Levenson as
a man who needed no intro-
duction, which was cer-
tainly true. Mr. Levenson
served his talk to order. He
told the one about the old
man who was asked how he
had made it to 90 and re-
plied that he started taking
vitamin pills at 89.
"And then there was
the old lady who was
asked by the nurse in the
doctor's office whether
she had ever been treated
by a doctor. No, she said,
she had always paid.
"His mother, with eight
children, was her own doc-
tor in East Harlem. Her
consultant, when needed,
was the lady next door.
What made her an expert?
Her husband washed win-
dows in a hospital. Loud
laughter from the workers.
"The Levenson humor cut
across etLnicity and incised
the hearts of everyone who
had a nodding acquaintance
with hardship."
