Wallenberg Is Honored by Yad Vashem

LONDON (JTA) — In a
simple ceremony on a
Jerusalem hillside this
week, the Jewish people
paid tribute to Raoul Wal-
lenberg, the Swedish dip-
lomat who helped save
20,000-50,000 Budapest
Jews from the Nazis.
Yad Vashem, the
Holocaust Memorial Foun-
dation, on Tuesday planted
a tree bearing his name in
the "Avenue of Righteous
Gentiles."
Wallenberg was seized as
a spy by the Russians at the
time of Budapest's libera-
tion.
The Soviet Union says he
died in Moscows Lubyanka
prison in 1947. Sweden is
not convinced and his fam-

ily hopes that Wallenberg,
who would now be 67, may
have survived, as a number
of former prisoners have
testified.
The Jerusalem cere-
mony follows a tireless
campaign by the family
to reawaken public con-
cern about the case.
For the first time, the
United States, which
prompted Wallenberg's
wartime mission to rescue
Budapest Jewry. has pub-
licly joined efforts to get at
the truth. Wallenberg is a
University of Michigan
graduate.
President Carter recently
confirmed that the U.S.
raised the Wallenberg case
with the Russians at the
summit meeting with
Soviet President Leonid
Brezhnev in Vienna last
summer. The Russians
adamantly maintained that
Wallenberg is dead. Carter
and leading U.S. Senators
have since lodged fresh in-
quiries with Brezhnev.
Mrs. Nina Lagergren,
Wallenberg's half-sister,
gave a press conference in
London last May hosted at
the House of Commons by
MP Greville Janner.
She and her other
brother, nuclear physi-
cist Guy von Dardel, then

flew to Israel where Pre-
mier Menahem Begin ap-
pealed to Carter to raise
the issue with Brezhnev
at the Vienna summit.
Subsequently, Mrs.
Lagergren visited Wash-
ington and this week
Prof. von Dardel is e n a
private visit to Moscow.
The inquiries are promp-
ted not only by the alleged
sightings of Wallenberg, of
which the latest was in
1975, but by the sketchiness
of the Russian account of his
death and by the fact that it
took the Russians over 12
years to admit that he had
been in their hands in the
first place.

U.S. Considers Huge
Arms Deal for Egypt

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Israel's ambassador to the
U.S., Ephraim Evron, met
with Assistant Secretary of
State Harold Saunders
Tuesday, at Evron's re-
quest, to clarify the Carter
Administration's dis-
cussions with Egypt about a
long-term military rela-
tionship. Congressional
sources indicated that Con-
gress is concerned that the
Administration may pro-

ceed toward a formal com-
mitment of military assis-
tance to Egypt on a level
with Israel. •

At two closed-door hear-
ings of the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee, Ad-
ministration officials indi-
cated that the discussions
with Egypt will take place
over the next several weeks
and that the program would
include delivery of F-16
warplanes. The New York
Times indicated that a $3
billion package was being
prepared to include 900
M 60 tanks and 80 F-16 jet
fighter planes.

-

The U.S. has already
supplied Egypt with 34
F-4 Phantom aircraft and
has promised delivery of
50 F5s while the British
are refurbishing 200
Soviet-built MiG
warplanes in the Egyp-
tian air force.

The U.S. is also consider-
ing sales of 200 M-60 tanks
to Jordan and $200 million
worth of advanced muni-
tions to Saudi Arabia.

A Limited War?

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Although most experts
agree that the Arab states
could not now hope to win a
war against Israel, Gen.
(Res.) Yehoshua Raviv be-
lieves that Syria and Iraq
could launch a limited war
against Israel.
He said a 1973-type war
coupled with the long-range
Soviet rockets now pos-
sessed by the two countries
could damage Israel's im-
age.

the campaign is Per Anger,
who has just retired as Swe-
den's Ambassador to
Canada. –
A colleague of Wallen-
berg in Budapest during the
war, Anger recently pub-
lished his memoirs. He
criticizes previous Swedish
governments for not secur-
ing Wallenberg's release in
the early 1950s and accuses
them of sacrificing him on
the "altar of neutrality." As
long as there is no proof to
the contrary, Anger main-
tains that Wallenberg is
still alive.
A sensational reminder
of Wallenberg's war
work emerged only a few
weeks ago when a Cana-
dian woman identified
herself as a baby who had
been born secretly in
Wallenberg's flat at the
end of 1944.
Until reading an article,
Mrs. Yvonne Singer. now a
mother of two, had never
been told of the circum-
stances of her birth or about
Wallenberg, who was her
godfather and who had
suggested one of her names.
