THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
JERUSALEM (JTA ) —
Sen. George McGovern, the
Dakota Democrat who ran
against Nixon for the U.S.
Presidency in 1972, says he
would favor military action
by the U.S. against Iran if
the U.S. hostages are put to
death.
McGovern, on a weekend
visit to Israel, made the
statement in a radio inter-
view in Jerusalem.
The Iran affair, he told
the Jerusalem Post, "has

appreciation of the fear of
terrorism that Israel has
had for 30 years .- . . This
situation is something new
for us . Now we know
how Israel feels about ter-
rorism."
McGovern was one of
the earliest U.S. leaders
to favor wooing the
Palestinians. He told the
Post that he supports
"for the moment" the
American Administra-
tion's policy of no-talks
with the PLO for fear of
jeopardizing the peace
negotiations.
McGovern said of the
PLO:
"It probably comes as
close as any group to speak-
ing for the Palestinians, but
it's not the only one."
On Jerusalem he said: "I
think Jerusalem must stay
united . . . The religious
shrines have been main-
tained with almost loving
care . . . They've never
been better cared for. I don't
think it can be improved."
