Middle East. He said that
the threat to the United
States and the urgency of
energy needs could lead to
another world war.
Addressing an audience
of more than 800, at the
meeting co-sponsored by
Beth Achim, the Zionist
Organization of Detroit and
Hadassah, Dr. Churba, who
is the president of Center for
International Security and
a former senior Middle East
intelligence adviser for the
U. S. Air Force, CIA and
National Security Council,
said that the USSR is on the
alert to step in in any criti-
cal situation involving Iran.
He said that Russian prop-
aganda has instigated much
of the anti-U.S. sentiment.

With oil continuing as the
predominant influence af-
fecting peace hopes, Dr.
Churba said that while
there is no unity among the
Arab nations Russia looks
for and will have the wedge
in case of a crisis. He em-
phasized that Israel re-
mains the most consistent
friend and associate in
democratic planning of the
U.S., but was critical of the
Administration's inconsis-
tency in protecting this
friendship.
As a matter of fact, he
assailed the State De-
partment and White
House for what he
termed as failures in
adhering to pledges, and
he charged that there is
pro-Arabism in the
American ruling forces.
He said that the use of the
Etzion air base as a stategic
area for the U.S. military
could contribute towards
eliminating many dangers,
but claimed that both Israel
and Egypt oppose granting
such rights to the U.S.
Dr. Churba said at a press
conference that a partition
of Iran is imminent and that
this, too, would lead to Rus-
sia assuming influence in
the area which looms as the
basic danger to this country.
He contends that Russia's
military power far superse-
des America's and he
warned that American mili-
tary strength is rapidly de-
clining.
At his press conference,
Dr. Churba charged that
U.S. policy now is aimed
mainly at securing an adop-
tive vote in the Senate for
the SALT II treaty. He ex-
pressed his opposition to it
and said he believed it
would be defeated in the Se-
nate.
Pessimistic about the
fate of the hostages held
in the U.S. embassy in
Teheran, Dr. Churba said
that insofar as the U.S.
policy is involved, if it is
"between hostages and
policy," that the hostages
may be sacrificed when a
firm policy is adopted.
His emphasis again was

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Iranian sutdents whc;
demonstrated last Friday at
the State Department
seemed to change their tac-
tics in regard to Arab-
Israeli problems.
Three weeks ago, a group
of such demonstrators car-
ried placards urging "Down
with Zionism" and shouted
"Long Live the Soviet Revo-
lution."
On Friday, there was no
indication in the demon-
stration of support for the
Soviets. Students carried
placards saying "Chris-
tians, Jews and Moslems
Are Brothers."

on Russia's influence. From
"classified sources" he has
learned that Soviet Ambas-
sador Vinogradov had twice
entered the U.S. embassy in
Teheran while the hostages
were being held there and
that he must surely have
gone at once for the U.S.
codes.
Dr. Churba also revealed
from his classified informa-
tion that members of
George Habash's Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine are among the
"students" who incarcer-
ated the hostages in the
U.S. embassy in Teheran.
Of interest during the
question-answer period at
the meeting was Dr. Chur-
ba's statement that he was
enrolled in Ronald Reagan's
ranks, supporting him for
President and acclaiming
him for his stand in behalf of
Israel. After this statement
he was widely cheered.
Rabbi Milton Arm wel-
comed the gathering to the
meeting in behalf of the
three co-sponsoring organ-
izations. Dr. Churba was in-
troduced by Annette Mes-
kin, president of Hadassah.
Sidney Silverman, ZOD
president, spoke about a
program of public relations
inaugurated to overcome
anti-Semitic, anti-Israel
and anti-Zionist activities
and urged membership
enrollment in the ZOD to
assist in the defensive and
educational activities.
