Friday, December 1, 1919 33 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Nursing Offered at Stern College Danny Raskin's LISTENING POST LOOKING BACK on Columns Of Yesteryears... JULY 9, 1948... "At the closing dinner of the Allied Jewish Campaign, folks were allowed an opportu- nity to offer special gifts in honor of others ... Ad man Leonard Simons gave a gift in honor of his future son a- in-law ... Leonard has two daughters . . . 15 and 11 years old respectively." AUG. 31, 1962 ... "Iry Ritten, Knights of Pythias, Detroit Lodge No. 55 member, made a beautiful- looking suggestion box to hang in the Castle Hall ... Only one thing was missing ... It's nailed firmly to the wall ... and there's no way to get the suggestions out!" FEB..14, 1969 ... "Bar- rister Joe Shulman tells about the fellow arrested for speeding and standing be- fore the traffic judge, who asked him if he had an alibi for his action ... 'Yes, your honor, my wife's organiza- tion is having a rummage sale and I was hurrying home to save, some of my clothes.' " APRIL 30, 1965 . . . "Great ambition of Dr. Louis F. Heyman has been to have a chauffeur drive him as he makes his hospi- tal rounds and house calls throughout the day . . . Being an unassuming per- son, Lou has never pursued this thought further for fear of what people would say . . . But it always lingered in the back of his mind while driving his many miles a day . "Last week, 100 guests helped celebrate a surprise birthday party for Lou's 40th at home of Marion and George Feuerman . After the guests had enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, what usually fol- lows at a surprise birthday party, the opening of gifts, never came about since the invitation gave a strict notice of no gifts . . . How- ever, wife Eleanor was not to be denied this pleasure ... and since material things are meaningless to Lou, what to give him put Eleanor in a dilemma .. "Suddenly, like a bolt out of the blue came a brilliant thought . . . The night of the party he read aloud to the guests a poem cleverly com- posed by Eleanor to Lou ... Then everyone went into the family room where a huge box was standing .. . carefully opened it with furled eyebrows ... and out bounced a 190-pound human being in full-dress uniform ... a live honest- to-goodness chauffeur .. . Eleanor's birthday gift to Lou for one full week!" MAY 14,1965 . "Elliott Siegel, 16-year-old son of Dr. Henry and Rosemarie Siegel, first had the show biz bug at age of eight, when his mother let him smell greasepaint backstage at a show she was in for Hadas- sah ... Eight years later, history repeats itself some- what ... Last Tuesday at Temple Israel, Elliott wrote, directed and pro- duced the temple youth group's musical revue, "That's Entertainment." JUNE 4, 1965 ... ..Ar- nold Aisen, bossman at Hol- lywood Mirror Gallery in the Green-Eight Center, still doesn't believe it .... Truck pulled in back with load of mirrors for him to display ... and he watched in horror as the dolly broke, crashing the huge box to the cement below ... Arnie opened it to see what was left ... Not a single one was broken!" "Interior decorators take note . . . Ruthe and Yale Kaliff` s apartment on Monte Vista has a lavender piano, one black wall and red carpeting . . . Can you top this?" "Irving Meltzer and wife Marilyn, former Detroiters, came back to the home town for a visit recently, after 12 years away, to say hello to Uncle Sam Boesky and cousin Bernard at Darbys . . . Irving has the 'Roarin '20s' in Cape Kennedy, where he is used to seeing rockets all day and is a friend of all the astronauts . Remember all that hul- labaloo about a corned beef sandwich being found in Young and Grissom's Ge- mini rocket? ... They got it from Irving ... and it be- came the first corned beef sandwich to find its way into space!"
