Jewish Studies Expand Despite Fund Cutbacks

WASHINGTON —
Jewish studies, which
gained legitimacy in
American colleges and uni-
versities during the last
quarter-century, have con-
tinued to expand in the face
of academic cutbacks, re-
ports the new academic
catalog, "Jewish Studies at
American and Canadian
Universities."

In the seven years since
the first such catalog was
printed, the number of
courses and of majors,
minors and graduate pro-
grams in Judaica has more
than doubled, although the
number of schools providing
courses and programs has
increased only slightly, say
the editors, Samuel Z.
Fishman and Judyth R.

TEL AVIV —A memorial
to the late Dr. Sara Feder-
Keyfitz, in the form of an
adult education program for
illiterate women, has been
established by Pioneer
Women. This course of
study will serve about 200
women in small classes,
with an expert teaching
staff, and an intensive pro-
gram of from one to three
years, depending on the
level of literacy.
Dr. Feder, a college pro-
fessor and advocate of
women's rights, served orig-
inally as a member of
Pioneer Women's national
secretariat, and from 1951
to 1955 as national
president. She died in
Jerusalem last January.

Mourning Rules Explained

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)
It is required for the next

of kin to tear his garment
when a relative dies. Two
sources are mentioned as
proof for this requirement.
A direct source is the
Bible where it is mentioned
that David tore his gar-
ments upon such an occa-
sion (H Samuel 13:31).
An indirect source men-
tions the fact that the Bible
prohibited Aaron from tear-
ing his clothing at the death
of his sons (Leviticus 10:6).
This was taken to imply
that all others do tear their
garments upon such an oc-
casion.
A variety of reasons
have been advanced for
this practice. Some claim
that death is a blow at the
dignity of mankind. Since
clothes are the mark of a
person's dignity, tearing
them indicates the loss of
dignity we experience
when coming into con-
frontation with death.
Others claim that the act
of tearing one's garments
serves as a sublimating ex-
perience. A person in grief

Arab Students
at Hebrew U.
Aided by AJC

JERUSALEM — Two
Arab students at the He-
brew University of
Jerusalem — Nain Iraqi
and Frida Iyub — received
scholarships from the
American Jewish Commit-
tee's Irving M. Engel Fund.
The scholarships come
from a grant by the Irving
M. Engel Fund for Human
Rights, created by friends of
Mr. Engel, who was the
honorary president of the
AJCommittee until his
death.

This is the fourth year
that scholarships have been
awarded from this fund to
Arab students, in accord-
ance with the wish of Mr.
Engel and the purposes of
the AJCommittee. Mr.
Engel also stipulated that
one of the two recipients be
a woman.

Jewish Braille
Institute Aided

NEW YORK — The
award of a $200,000 match-
ing challenge grant from
the National Endowment
for the Humanities to the
Jewish Braille Institute of
America, Inc. has been an-
nounced by Dr. Jane Evans,
president of the institute.

The grant is for the de-
velopment and expansion of
JBI's library services. It will
be given over a three-year
period during which the in-
stitute will conduct a cam-
paign to raise funds in a
three-to-one ratio enabling
it to receive the full federal
grant.

most be bent on self-

f causing him-
self any harm he makes a
tear in his garment which
releases his sense of anger
and grief.
It is required for the
mourner to stand when he
makes the tear in his
clothes.
When Job tore his
clothes, the Bible states
that he "arose" (Job 1:20).
At least two reasons are
offered for this.
One is that a person is not
supposed to lose his convic-
tion when he expresses grief
and so he remains standing
to imply that in spite of his
grief he has not fallen from
his belief in the Almighty
and His justice.
Another reason offered is
that the person who makes
the tear in his clothes ex-
presses his belief in the jus-
tice of the Almighty orally
in the form of a benediction.
Almost all benedictions re-
quire a standing position.
Thus the benediction
made when one tears one's
clothes in grief over the loss
of a loved one would also re-
quire a standing position.
