Labor Zionists Publish a Tribute to B-Z Ilan
as an American Soldier-Pioneer in Palestine

Ben-Zion Ilan was a
genuine Halutz. He per-
sonified the kibutz spirit.
He was much more than
that: he was a dedicated
Socialist-Zionist and he was
an inspiration to the Labor
Zionist youth.
He died four years ago
and his autobiographical

Labor Zionist movement to
help establiiih the youth

was often introduced by his

Zionist-published "An
American Soldier/Pioneer
in Israel."

Detroiters knew him
well. A native American, he
lived in Afikim, one of the
pioneering settlements in
northern Israel. From there
he traveled widely to advo-
cate the Labor Zionist idea.
In that way he inspired
others to become halutzim,
to settle in and help build
Palestine into the Jewish
National Home and into Is-
rael.

Ben-Zion Ilan was mar-
ried to the former Frieda
Shevitz, a Detroit student
who visited Palestine in
1934 and there met Benny,
her future husband. They
were among the pioneer
founders of Afkim.
Ben-Zion was in Detroit

Official Rejects
Arab Subsidy

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
Jan de Koning, Nether-
lands minister for develop-
ment aid, has again rejected
a request of The Nether-
lands Palestine Committee
for an annual subsidy of
35,000 Guilders ($17,500).
The committee had wanted
this subsidy to enable it to
engage in full-time organiz-
ing.
De Koning rejected the
request despite positive
recommendation by the Na-
tional Advisory Commis-
sion for Development Aid.
He said the committee seeks
the destruction of Israel.

Golda Meir, who worked
with and admired Ben-Zion,
wrote the introduction to
this important memoir be-
fore her death. It was a not-
able tribute to him as well
as to his father, an Ameri-
can dentist, whose Zionist
idealism was shared by his
son and his family.
