he Best of Everything)

(Continued from Page 37)
A crap game was run-
ning around the corner —
big-timers I mean with
$1,000 riding on every
roll. The game finished
about 4 a.m. and the boys
made it a habit to drop
into the Club Durant for a
few laughs.
" 'That made us. The
dice-throwers spread the
news. They told everyone to
come and get a load of this
hot outfit, and did they
come. Besides the regulars,
we drew the cream of the
theater on Broadway as
well as the bottom layers.'
"The partners stayed
open as long as customers
were spending money.
Union hours meant nothing
in their young lives. Within
two years, the little club
was one of the best known in
New York.
One night John Barry-
more came in. You ought to
play Hamlet, Jimmy,' he
told Durante after seeing
his act. Durante thought
Barrymore was telling him
to play in the sticks so he
shot back, 'I'm satisfied
with New York.' What did
Durante know about Ham-
let?
"Durante played the
piano until he started to
be a floor entertainer,
ad-libbing and kidding
around. The customers
loved it.
"Eventually the Durant
Club was padlocked and
Durante opened the Dover
Club with Jackson and Lou
Clayton. They loved to see
big spenders come rolling
into the club.
" 'A man at the ringside
calls the hoofers and pre-
sents them with a hundred
dollar bill,' Durante said.
`Gee, that's a big shot. A sort
of electric thrill goes over
the room. Here's a guy
who'll spend.
" "There's champagne at

his table. The orchestra
leader wants to know if he
has any particular tunes
he'd like to hear. They dig
up In the Shade of the Old
Apple Tree' for him.
The other customers
feel important being
close to big money. Like
the felloW who tossed a
dollar bill on the floor at
Diamond Tony's or the
chump who bought beer
for everybody in
Maxine's, it's just a desire
to hog the limelight. Out-
side of the thrill, the
spender can't get his
money's worth. It just
isn't in the wood.'
"Big spenders weren't of
the Park Ave. crowd, ac-
cording to Durante. The
stick-up man or the book-
maker makes a bigger flash
with his coin than the
swankiest member of the
400. Society people are
notoriously poor tippers.
"Durante predicted night
clubs as he knew them
wouldn't stick around. But
he doubted if anyone would
invent something brand
new to keep people out of
bed at night.
" The night life gets in
your blood,' he said. You
grow restless when the yel-
low bulbs begin to flicker
along Broadway. You want
to step. It may be a gift or a
disease, but it exists. As
long as it does, there will be
night clubs of one sort or an-
other.
" `And as long as there are
night clubs and my legs and
voice hold out, I suppose I
shall be around them.' "
