THE FUTURE Obstetrical and Newborn Service Renovation Project Moving Into Our Next Quarter Century In January, after months of planning and deliberation, Sinai Hospital submitted an application for Certificate of Need to the Department of Public Health (MDPH) for the modernization and renovation of the obstetrical and newborn service. The proposed project calls for no new beds, although space for the existing service would be expanded and new personnel to support the "birthing" program would be required at some point in time. The project application was reviewed locally by the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Southeast Michigan during March and received a positive recommendation. It was then reviewed and approved by the MDPH in July. The program that will be implemented at Sinai Hospital for obstetrical and infant care, facilitated by this renovation project, has several components including: Planning for the future of Sinai Hospital at its present location in northwest Detroit (with the intent to expand its outreach capabilities for the benefit of community members who have emigrated to the suburbs) has already begun. This year has been a time of change and review in the Administrative area in order to maintain and improve the health care already provided by Sinai Hospital. A blue-ribbon committee of the Board of Trustees has been reviewing the corporate By-Laws as well as the structure of its various committees to continue to make them relevant for future needs. As the Hospital moves into its next quarter century of service, the Board of Trustees and the Administration is pleased to announce that two major modernization projects have begun this year. The renovation of the Sinai Hospital Emergency Room began this fall and this summer the Michigan Department of Public Health granted Sinai Hospital a Certificate of Need for its Obstetrical and Newborn Service Renovation Project. - Services and facilities for high risk mothers and infants. Family-centered maternal and infant care including a Birthing Room, which is a private room located within the Labor and Delivery Suite. - "Rooming-In" option where mothers are given the opportunity to have the newborn remain with them in their rooms during their hospital stay. Emergency Room Renovation The project is expected to be completed in about 18 months. It is being partially funded through a $500,000 grant from the United Foundation. The reconstruction plan will more than double the existing size of our Emergency Room — all for the benefit of our patients and community members. The new space will include a Critical Care Room and a Holding Area. There will also be separate critical care holding areas, as well as trauma and resuscitation stations, an enlarged waiting room and additional office and storage space. 20 Supplement to the Jewish News Medical Endowment Fund Sinai Hospital has launched a $20 million Medical Endowment Fund campaign under the auspices of the United Jewish Charities. The goal of $20 million was brought a long step toward realization by the unprecedented gift of $1 million from Harold and Goldie Soble and the promise of many other contributions from trustees and friends of the hospital.
