As my first year as president of the Board of Trustees of
Sinai Hospital draws to a close, I can proudly say that it
has been an exciting and productive year.
During the past 12 months a blue ribbon committee of
the Board has been entrusted with reviewing the
corporate By-Laws. The structure of Board committees
has also been studied to keep the composition of the
Board in line with modern hospital philosophy. There has
been more involvement of the Board in decision-making
and it has been given new challenges for planning and
policy decisions which must be made in the near future.
There have been recent changes, too, among the Board
of Trustees. Our Board has been strengthened with the
induction of several new members who bring with
themselves diverse backgrounds and interesting
perspectives on the issues which we will address as Sinai
enters into another quarter century of service to the
community.

The deaths of three Trustees this year have deprived the Board of the wise counsel of astute businessmen and
outstanding community leaders. Two of the members were current Board officers: Malcolm S. Lowenstein, Board
vice president and member since 1966; and Max Weinberg, treasurer and chairman of the Finance Committee.
The third, Isadore Winkelman, a member since 1956, had the distinction of being a Life Member of the Board.
On a brighter note, it is with great pride that we mention two major modernization projects which have been
acted upon this year in our preparations for the future.
Our Emergency Room renovation has begun and is expected to be completed in about 18 months. Our
Obstetrical and Newborn Service Project has received approval from the Michigan Department of Public Health
and will begin shortly. We are extremely happy to announce a significant contribution from Mrs. Harry Srere
which has been received for the Obstetrical Project.
On behalf of the entire Board, I would also like to congratulate Irving A. Shapiro, who has been promoted to the
position of executive vice president following the retirement of Dr. Julien Priver this year. Mr. Shapiro and his
administrative staff have the vote of confidence of the Board.
We look forward to the coming year with great excitement, knowing that Sinai Hospital has the leadership,
management direction, medical excellence and Board support to maintain our high standards of patient care.
