Museum of the Diaspora Celebrates 1st Anniversary

By JANET

Fragment by precious
fragment slips into place as
the patchwork quilt of world
Jewry is pieced together at
Beth Hatefutsot, the
museum of the Jewish
Diaspora. Beth Hatefutsot
opened a year ago on the
campus of the Tel Aviv Uni-
versity after almost 20
years of planning.
The museum, or "central
dwelling" as it is referred to
in Hebrew, presents a con-
,:ept of Jewry rather than
displaying a collection of
authentic memorabilia. It
does not attempt to gather,
preserve or exhibit objects
of value, but instead it effec-
tively portrays the diversity
of world Jewry during its
2,500 years of dispersion
and persecution while
showing the unifying influ-
ence of religion which
enabled the survival of
Judaism.
Pulling together colorful
strands of life, culture and
spiritual values, and weav-
ing them into a memorable

picture of world Jewry, Beth
Hatefutsot is not so
revolutinary in its purposes
as in its methodology. Di-
vided into seven sections or
"gates," the museum pro-
vides an audio-visual tour of
Jewish life, including: Fam-
ily, community, faith, cul-
ture, among the nations, re-
turn to Zion and chromos-
phere.
Certain to be one of the
museum's most popular
attractions is the
Chromosphere. Still
under construction, this
auditorium will include a
Disney-like panorama
display of the history of
the Jewish people
flashed on its dome. In
addition, every corner of
the museum includes the
use of audio-visual aids
such as slide shows, re-
cordings, miniature re-
productions and
dioramas, depicting the
many facets of Jewish life
in various periods and
areas of the world.
Three films produced by
Beth Hatefutsot and shown
in minicinemas portray the

also have been installed in
each of the museum's four

ern usage of video cassettes
and small television sc-

films (over 30 today in

Education Center

TEL AVIV — A program
for planning and develop-

was proposed recently by
Prof. Haim Ben-Shahar,
president of Tel Aviv Uni-
versity, at an international
symposium on the univer-

envisioned by Ben-Shahar
in two phases. The first, a
general preparatory stage
will include designating
educational goals, prepara-
tion of educational pro-
grams, establishing a
framework for developing
educational materials, and
centers for teacher training
and research. The second
phase will consist of de-
velopment of an educational
network throughout the
Diaspora, which will fea-
ture prestige institutions on
a primary and secondary
school level.
The education center will
be administered by a world
senate of Jewish scholars
and intellectuals, expert in
all spheres of Jewish
thought who will direct the
work. A board of governors
of world Jewish leaders, as
well as Israeli leaders, and
members of the world se-
nate will function to raise

Beth Hatefutsot's Youth

soldiers and special interest
groups who want to inten-

which the museum includes
18 faithful miniature re-
productions from around
the world) or a study of the
Holocaust.

economy — It grows its food — On it

the entire Jewish people, linking the
name of the Testator with Israel in
perpetuity.
