Essie Lev, an immigrant
to Israel from California
and volunteer at the shel-
ter, expressed the surprise
felt by many to learn of bat-
tered wives in Israel.
"I grew up in a home,
and a neighborhood,
where both Jews and
Christians had the idea
that Jewish men make
the best husbands. I was
originally shocked to
learn that Jewish men
beat their wives. I
shouldn't haVe been. And
I'm sure it goes on among
Jewish couples in
California, just like it
does here in Israel."
The institution, whose
operations are funded by
municipal and national
funds, is housed in a small,
residential bungalow with
two bedrooms, a living
room, a kitchen-dining area
and bathroom. Despite its
small size, it has served as
temporary refuge for up to
32 women and children at
one time.
Most of the women who
reach the shelter are from
impoverished backgrounds,
and of Eastern origin. Simi-
lar problems also exist
among other socio-economic
levels, Ms. Reznic points
out, but more established
women can afford other
ways of leaving the house —
such as a trip inside Israel
or even abroad, staying in a
hotel, or staying with
friends.
Those who come to the
shelter generally married
young, and lack profes-
sional training. They often
face strong pressure from
their families to remain
with their husbands, re-
gardless of the domestic
situation. With no experi-
ence of managing on their
own, and unable to return to
their parents, they seek ref-
uge at the institution.
For some of the women,
just the fact that they
have a place to seek help
solves their problems.
The institution supplies
marriage counseling for
those who want it, legal
aid for those women who
seek. a divorce, or who
want to bring charges
against their husbands,
and psychological coun-
seling for the women
and-or their husbands.
The women also discuss
their situation among
themselves and provide
each other with a great deal
of moral support. In addi-
tion to Ms. Reznic, whose

Recently we ran into Saul
Rogovin, a former pitching
mainstay of the Detroit Ti-
gers, Chicago White Sox,
the Orioles and the
Philadelphia Phillies.
Rogovin, after he finished
his career in the big
leagues, and after serving a
term with a national liquor
company, decided to go back
to school.
Rogovin is now substitute
teaching on a fairly regular
basis at the Charles Evans
Hughes High School in
downtown New York which
is near his home.
While Rogovin served his
tenure in the minors, in the
International League, he
had two Jewish teammates,
Cy Block, who ultimately
wound up with the Chicago
Cubs and Ernie Silverman,
giving the Bisons three
Jewish players at the Triple
A level.
