Klarsfeld Deplores the Rise in Neo-Nazism

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Nazi-hunter Beate
Klarsfeld warned last week
that neo-Nazism is on the
rise in Europe, especially in
Italy and France. In West
Germany, however, the
young generation is
strongly anti-Nazi and
anti-fascist, she observed.

Klarsfeld, who was a guest
speaker at Dialogue '79, the
discussion forum sponsored
by Cong. Bnai Jeshurun,
also warned that there is a
resurgence of Ku Klux Klan
activities in the U.S. and
called upon Americans to
confront and fight fascism
in this country.

Klarsfeld, who resides in
Paris, said that since the
neo-Nazis were defeated in
1969 in their bid for seats in
the German Parliament
they now operate in "small,
very determined groups."
She said that in order to ex-
pose them they should be
confronted in their meeting

places and at public func-
tions.
She said that everyone
who is concerned about
the resurgence of neo-
Nazism should person-
ally engage in exposing
them.
Noting the increase in
neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic
incidents in France,
Klarsfeld accused French
police of not doing very
much to fight this phenom-
enon.
Discussing neo-Nazism in
the U.S. Klarsfeld urged
that it be combatted while it
is still "small," noting that
Hitler's movement was also
ignored and dismissed at

the beginning as unimpor-
tant. "Neo-Nazism in
America should be stopped
at the beginning," she said.
Klarsfeld called on Jews
in America and Israel to try
and attend the trials of Nazi
war criminals in Germany
and see for themselves that
justice is done.
Although she noted
that German youth is
generally anti-Nazi, she
pointed out that in the
last decade there has
been growing anti-Israel
feelings in Germany
among the youth who
identify with Palestinian
aspirations and is there-
fore anti-Israel and
anti-Zionist.
Klarsfeld said she and her
lawyer husband are "de-
termined" to continue to
pursue Nazis, despite the
risk and the disruption to
their "normal life." She dis-
closed that recently a pack-
age containing explosives
was sent to her, but she said
threats of that kind and
others will not stop her from
pursuing Nazis.

3 Alleged Nazis
Charged in U.S.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Department of Justice
has filed a suit to revoke
the citizenship of Karl Lin-
nas on grounds that he con-
cealed his Nazi past when
he entered the United
States in 1951 and became a
citizen in 1960.
According to the .suit,
Linnas, a 60-year-old native
of Estonia, selected pris-
oners for execution when he
was commander of the
guard at the Tartu concen-
tration camp in Nazi-
occupied Estonia from 1941
to 1943.
A resident of Green-
lawn, Long Island, Lin-
nas was condemned to
death in absentia by the
Soviet Union in 1962 for
complicity in the execu-
tions of 12,000 inmates at
Tartu.
Earlier last week, de-
naturalization proceedings
were begun against
Wolodimir Osidach, 75, of
Philadelphia and Bohdan
Kozly, 56, of Fort Lauder-
dale, Fla. for alleged roles in
Nazi atrocities in the Uk-
raine and Poland during
World War II.

PARIS (JTA) — The
president of the European
Assembly, Simone Veil,
warned against the conse-
quences of anti-Semitism
and racism and said "this
symptom is of serious im-
portance not only to Europe
but also to the entire world."
Ms. Veil, who was speaking
Nov. 18 at the national con-
ference of the International
League Against Anti-
Semitism (LICA), said that
current racism is jointly
anti-Jewish and anti-Arab.
This phenomenon was
stressed by many of the 400
participants who attended
the conference.
