Airline Answers
ADL Complaint

NEW YORK - Iberia
Airlines, in answer to an
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith complaint, has
acknowledged that a
Spanish Passion Play de-_
scribed in its inflight maga-
zine was "distasteful; in its
reference to Jews.
According to Jose
Aragones,
Iberia's
t o
president and general man-
ager in the U.S., the play
was written in the 17th
Century and "is only
anachronism and not )
motely indicative of the re-
spect of the Jewish commu- •
- nity held by Iberia and its
personnel."

In a letter to Abrliam H.
Foxman, ADL's associate
national director, Aragones
said the article about the
play, which appeared in the -
August issue of "Rondo
c=
Iberia," should not be inter-
preted as "reflecting any
feeling of anti-Semitism on
the part of Iberia or the
Spanish people."
The magazine's report
on the play included a
reference to Jews as "try-
ing to profane the body"
of the Virgin Mary. Fox-
man, in asking for an
apology from Iberia, ..bad
said the play "is devoid of
any historical and
theological evidence"
and is "a sign of anti-
Semitism and prejudice
already denounced by
the Church in Vatican II
documents."
He enclosed a copy of an
ADL-sponsored critique of
the Passion Play produced
in Oberammergau, West
Germany, which suggested
changes to reduce that
play's anti-Semitic content.
Most of the changes have
been adopted for the 1980
production.

NEW YORK - The Ford
Foundation has awarded a
$100,000 grant to support
Israeli research on educat-
ing the disadvantaged. The
money will be used for five
projects by the National
Council of Jewish Women's
Research Institute in Israel,
which is devoted to the edu-
cation of disadvantaged
children and youth.
Among the projects the
grant supports are the fol-
lowing: a compendium of all
major Israeli research proj-
ects on the education oft
disadvantaged; a_compai
ive study of tutorial systems
in Israel, Europe and
America; a monograph on
the effectiveness of ability
grouping in education for
the disadvantaged; _a study
of the impact of the climate
of schools on the perform-
ance of disadvantaged stu-
dents; and the development
of science curricula in
physica, also for the disad-
vantaged.
The Ford funds are an ex-
tension of a two-year,
$200,000 grant awarded in
1977.
All projects will be com-
pleted next year.
