LISTENING
POST

IT'S CALLED The
Mercedes Benz" of knitting
yarn . . . but in the price
range for all pockets .. .
This is the Laines Anny
Blatt, sold by exclusive dis-
tributor in the entire
United States, Irma Mar-
cus, wife of Sam Marcus,
executive vice president of
the Fresh Air Society.
The all new "art gallery"
concept by Irma is at
Applegate Square, North-
western and Inkster . . . in-
cluding yarn for knitting,
crocheting and weaving,
lessons, ready-made and
custom-made hand knits .. .
The walls are lined with
more than 500 kinds of
yarns and colors in an amaz-
ing array of this one famous
make instead of many
different types.
Irma and Sam were vaca-
tioning in London when she
discovered a tiny knit shop
in the Covent Garden area
of London . . . Being a knit-
ter and weaver from way
back, she was enthralled by
the material and discovered
that it was from France and
not sold anywhere in the
United States . . . Irma
and Sam went to France,
where she convinced the
company to give her sole
distribution rights for the
United States .. .
After two visits to
France, the last one by
herself to Tourcoing,
where only French is
spoken, they sealed the
pact ... even though she
told them of never before
being in business . . .
Lucky for her, they also
spoke English.
Anny Blatt is the daugh-
ter of a French designer who
named the company after
her daughter years ago .. .
and sold it with the pro-
vision that the name be re-
tained . Laines means
yarn.
CRITERION CLUB has
a couple of happy boasts .. .
Cecile Bartholomew,
president, and Samuel
Rothenberg were wed .. .
Also past president Esther
Bershad and London Chop
House artist Hy Vogel.
LOOKING BACK On
Columns of Yesteryears .. .
SEPT. 28, 1956 ... "Maj.
Max Gurman, public rela-
tions man at Selfridge
Field, tells of a visit recently
to watch an artillery outfit
test their atomic shells .. .
The explosions were enough
to awaken the dead, says
Max . . . Suddenly a tough-
looking cook raced out of the
company kitchen . . . Swing-
ing a meat axe, he headed
straight for the artillery
sergeant . . . 'Stop firing
-that damn thing around
- here,' he screamed over the
roar. Tye got 3,000 angel
food cakes in the oven!' "
DEC. 7, 1956 ... "When
Herb Wise goes duckhunt-
ing, he needs none of the
highfalutin paraphernalia
which hunters like to get .. .

just his trusty old double-
barreled fowling piece .. .
One time, he took nephew
Barry Silverman along .. .
A solitary duck flew over
the blind . . . 'Down you go,'
chuckled Herb, and fired .. .
The duck flew serenely on
... Herb scratched his head
. . . 'Son,' he said to nephew
Barry, 'you are witnessing a
miracle. There flies a dead
duck!' "
DEC. 14, 1956 . . .
"Paulette Grant, five-year-
old fifth grader at Emerson
School, refused to submit a
Christmas project, insisting
that her holiday was
Hanuka and that was what
she weuld work on . . . The
teacher was insistent that
she . do what the other
youngsters were doing .. .
and stubborn little Paulette
was equally so in regards to
Hanuka . . . So much so, in
fact, that she went straight
to the principal and told her
story . . . Final result,
Paulette's project was on
Hanuka."
FEB. 28, 1969 . . . "Lt.
Sanford Friedman, serving
in the finance section in
Vietnam, went to Sydney,
Australia for a week's R and
R (rest and recreation) .. .
While there, he sent home a
kangaroo coat and hat made
especially for him, but
wrote to dad, Harry L.
Friedman that he could
break them in for him until
his return home after a
world tour . . . The coat and
hat fits Harry like a king
and it looks like he'll make
it on the list for the best-
dressed man in town .. .
Sanford wrote mother, Jean
Friedman, that he is send-
ing her an elephant from
Thailand and she can either
keep it in the garage as her
pet or make a coat out of it!"
"Post card from Sister
Margaret O'Shea at Saints
Convent in Detroit came to
the Jewish National Fund
requesting information on
the procedure for donating a
tree to be planted in Israel
. . . Percy Kaplan, executive
director of the JNF here,
sent the info to her and re-
ceived $2.50 from Sister
Margaret with a card
thanking him for the infor-
mation and saying, 'When I
am rich I will place a large
order for a grove, but now I
will be happy with one tree
planted in honor of Sister
Margaret Brennan. Al-
though she is Catholic, I
think she has a Jewish
spirit!' "

90th Anniversary

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Argentine Embassy of-
ficially marked the 90th
anniversary today of the
founding of the first Jewish
agricultural colony in
Argentina by refugees flee-
ing persecution in Europe.

Proposals, as understopd,
by the proposer, will be
judged otherwise by others.

JERUSALEM (JTA` —
One of the first casualties of
new Finance Minister Yigal
Hurwitz's tough economic
program was the recently
inaugurated "tattle-tale
telephone," a device by
which the Treasury
encouraged citizens to in-
form anonymously on any-
one they suspected of evad-
ing taxes.
Hurwitz ordered it
abolished and won the
plaudits of the press and
public. The special switch-
board, staffed by income tax
investigators, was receiving
calls on the order of, ". . . My
neighbor bought a new car,

Specializing in Authentic
Italian-American Dining

where did he get the
money?" and "My mother-
in-law has taken a cruise
though she claims to be a
poor widow."

To breed up the son to
common sense is evermore
the parent's least expense. •
