U.S. Sen. Carl Levin
(D-Mich.) accused Republi-
can Presidential hopeful
John Connally of being will-
ing to sacrifice Israel for a
secure oil supply for the
U.S.
In a speech prepared for
delivery to the Jewish Re-
constructionist Foundation
in New York, Levin said:
"As we approach the
1980s, a new voice is begin-
ning to be heard again — a
voice which says that Jews
will seek to protect their
interest as Jews at the ex-
pense of our interests as
Americans.
"This voice, like all such
v oices in the past puts a-
chill upon us and fear in us.
In another age, an age with-
out King Oil, that voice
would have been quietly
spreading its filth in organ-
izations such as the Ku
Klux Klan.
But in the age of King
Oil, if Americans think
that • American-Jewish
influence is the cause of a
foreign policy which
brings us long gas lines
and expensive heating oil
at home, and, if a Con-
nally takes it to the hust-
ings, then in this age I
fear that we will he a r that
voice growing louder and
louder and being heard
in wider and wider cir-
cles."
Levin criticized Connally
for proposing that a Mideast

A mixture of misery and
education is highly explo-
sive.

peace depends on the Arab
world guaranteeing that
the U.S. can again "enjoy
stable oil prices and secure
oil supplies."
Sen. Levin voiced his ob-
jection to Connally's pro-
posal that Israel withdraw
from Arab territories and
that the Palestinians be
allowed to decide whether
West Bank and Gaza should
be governed as an indepen-
dent entity or as an auton-
omous area of Jordan.

Levin warned against
viewing the danger from a
narrow Jewish perspective.
"If the American people see
us as acting from a motive
powered by 'Jewish self-
interest' rather than
`American self-interest,'
then we can become
threatened — and so will Is-
rael."
