O F
KICK
since his call last year for an
outreach program to pro-
spective converts, Reform
congregations had de-
veloped programs for that
goal. He spoke at a press
conference at the annual
meeting of the executive
council of the American
Jewish Committee.
He said that in many
such congregations, con-
verts are teaching classes
"and discussion groups
geared to the specific
needs of converts and
their families have been
implemented to discuss
problems they have
encountered within their
families and from
friends." He said "we
may reject intermarriage
but we cannot turn away
the intermarried."
He added he had received
"thousands of letters from
non-Jews" who wrote they
were glad Jews had dropped
our 'exclusivity status' and
wish information on pro-
grams in their area in which
they can be involved."
He stressed he would not
support any proselytization
program using "coercion,"
of "brainwashing rather
than education," which
"castigates another faith or
guarantees an individual's
salvation. An outreach pro-
gram cannot be conducted
as a religious circus."
A differing view was ex-
pressed by Yehuda Rosen-
man, director of the agen-
cy's Jewish Communal Af-
Presented by Martin Scot Kosins
fairs department, who de-
dared it was "far more im-
perative to direct resources
and concentrate efforts
toward making Jewishness
_ more meaningful to run-
synagogued' Jews to retain
them within the Jewish
community."
But he agreed that
synagogues and Jewish
services
communal
"should improve their ef-
forts to welcome con-
verts, make them feel
more comfortable and
integrate them within the
Jewish community."
