THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israelis Return Diary of Slain Egyptian Soldier to His Family By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV — The diary, found on the body of an Egyptian diver killed in the Yom Kippur War, 22-year- old Mohamed Mahmoud Nada, said, it had to be de- livered to his father. Sgt. Nada was killed in battle near Kabrit. He and six Egyptian soldiers tried to escape from the Israeli encirclement of the Third Egyptian Army. Six years after his death his will has been carried out by an Israeli emissary. He visited Nada's family in Alexandria, his parents and his brother and sister. The father was bewildered when he was handed his dead son's diary. He was deeply moved and said to the emis- WC. Trojan "Son of C. She showed the emissary her son's little room. There was only an old iron bed and a small table in it. There were some pictures of her in military uniform hanging on the wall. Also some of him as a student at the Uni- versity of Alexandria. The father handed a photo of his son to the Is- raeli emissary. "My son was not like you may think," he said. "He did not wish to be a hero. He was enlisted against his will and was sent to the Sea Commandos. Before the war he had plans to go to Germany or France in order to work there as a diver and support his family. He had a difficult military job and his health was not good. He became sick, often losing his balance. Sometimes it was too hard for him and he escaped and came home. "During his military service he started to study in the university. He studied literature in the evenings," the father said. We knew, that Mohamed started to write a diary. He was kindhearted. He was sorry that his family was poor and lived under dif- ficult conditions. He always tried to help his family. "Mohamed was a senti- mental and sensitive man. He liked classical music, like Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mozart, etc. He liked movies. My son was a fatalist," the father said. "He prophesied in his diary, that he might be killed in the war with Israel. We do not feel any enmity towards Israel. We know that you have also suffered much from the wars. We are happy with the peace, brought by President Sadat. With God's help there will be no further wars." Nada's younger brother Majid, said that he was happy about the peace with Israel. Among the entries in the diary are the following: Saturday, Oct. 20: "I hate this war. I hope it will end soon. I sleep very little in spite of tiredness. The word 'war' is the dirtiest word invented in human language." Sunday, Oct. 28: "Our El Al Gets New President TEL AVIV (JTA) — Ab- raham Shavit, a prominent industrialist and president of the Israel Manufacturers Association, assumed his new post last week as chairman of El Al, Israel's national airline, in a new attempt to put the troubled carrier on a sound economic footing. We have no water. I found a cigarette and smoked. Sadat should capitulate and negotiate with Isarel in order to save 25,000 soldiers on the Eastern side of the Suez Canal.
