Mondale Upholds U.S. Stand
on an Undivided Jerusalem
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Vice President Walter
Mondale, speaking for
President Carter, said that
we stand for an undivided
Jerusalem with free access
to all holy places" and oppo-
sition to an independent
Palestinian state on the
West Bank and Gaza.
Mondale addressed 1,000
prominent Jewish per-
sonalities from the U.S. and
Canada and several Latin
American and European
Countries attending a State
of Israel Bonds "Interna-
tional Dinner of Tribute" to
Sam Rothberg, a principal
founder and presently
chairman of the Israel Bond
organization.
The gathering launched
the Israel Bond organiza-
tion's 1980 campaign with a
goal of $1 billion. More than
$35 million was raised in
Bonds and notes at the
dinner, much of it in
Rothberg's name. He also
was presented with the first
Golda Meir Leadership
Award, a bust of the late Is-
raeli premier by the noted
Baltimore sculptor, Paul
Goodman.
Mondale shared the
platform with Israel's
Interior Minister Yosef
Burg representing Pre-
mier Menahem Begin,
who could not attend the
dinner because of "ur-
gent affairs- of state."
Mondale declared, "Israel
is no longer tentative. The
state of Israel is forever." In
a salute to the Isarel Bond
drive, he said, "When you
buy Israel Bonds you Pare
buying peace." Speaking for
himself and President Car-
ter, he said, "We will stand
by Israel always . . . Israel is
our friend, our partner, our
conscience. Its well being is
in our strategic interest."
He said the Carter Ad-
ministration stands for a
comprehensive peace" in

The Psychiatric Viewpoint
Editor, The Jewish News:
With regard to Dr.
Emanuel Tanay's letter
about Dr. Thomas Szasz's
talk at the Birmingham
Temple:
Although Dr. Tanay is
perfectly justified in
criticizing Dr. Szasz's views,
he should remember that
Dr. Szasz did mention the
residential homes which Dr.
Tanay said were often lo-
cated in "social service
ghettos" of large cities.
Along with being against
forcing people into institu-
tions or into electric shock
therapy, Dr, Szasz made a
special point of saying that
he was against forcing
patients out of mental hos-
pitals into those very half-
way houses to which Dr.
Tanay refers.
Angry as Dr. Szasz may
have made many
psychiatrists, it's good to
have a rebel shake bp his
colleagues once in a
while. It makes them re-
examine their own ideas,
which is a good preven-
tive measure against
hardening positions.
And who knows, occa-
sionally even a bad boy
could be right about a thing
or two.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A de-
cision calling for the con-
tinued struggle against
neo-Fascism, neo-Nazism
and anti-Semitism was
adopted Sunday in Moscow
at the special meeting of the
International Committee
on Auschwitz Affairs. Some
18 countries were repre-
sented, including Israel.
Most of the participants are
citizens of countries that
were under the Nazi occu-
pation during World War II.
In the three days of delib-
erations it was the Israeli
delegate, Stefan Grayek,
chairman of Jewish Fight-
ers Association, who promp-
ted the adoption of a resolu-
tion that would include
anti-Semitism as a target of
the struggle. The Russians
agreed to the resolution.
Other decisions included
a condemnation of the de-
secration of cemeteries in
various countries and a call
to hasten the legal proceed-
ings against war criminals
in Germany.
the Middle East, but "we
don't favor an independent
Palestinian state. We will
not negotiate with the PLO
and we will not recognize
the PLO unless it first rec-
ognizes Israel and UN Secu-
rity Council Resolutions
242 and 338. It is past time
for the PLO to recognize Is-
rael. It is past time for an
end to terrorism."
In a reference to the
U.S.-Iranian crisis, Mon-
dale declared, "We will not
succumb to blackmail over
Israel or over oil — nor will
we succumb to it in Iran."
