S. Africa Bans
Styron's 'Sophie'
NEW YORK — William
Styron's best-selling novel,
"Sophie's Choice," about a
non-Jewish concentration
camp survivor, her Jewish
lover and a young Southern
novelist, has been banned in
South Africa.
No reason was given for
the ban, but the author
speculates that its sexual
explicitness might have
been the cause. (The book
was reviewed in The Jewish
News Sept. 7.)
