14 Detroiters . m . UJA Mission See Israel's Growth and Problems

By JANET MENDELSOHN

JERUSALEM —"Our job
is to raise Jews," says De-
troiter Stanley Frankel,
and the Jews will raise the
money." Stressing the fact
that education is a positive
factor in assuring the con-

tinuity of Jewish heritage,
Frankel recently joined 13
other Detroiters, led by
Myron L. Milgrom, in a
whirlwind educational tour
of Israel as part of the 1980
United Jewish Appeal
President's Mission.

The Detroit contingent,
in addition, to 300 other
North American represen-
tatives, witnessed Israel's
development as well as the
country's most pressing
problems.

flow for a Jew to become
aware of his obligaitons,"
says Frankel, the current
chairman of the National
Young Leadership Cabinet
of the United Jewish Ap-
peal. "Understanding is
the key to continuity, and if
a person cannot transmit
his heritage to his children,
then he will certainly lose
his grandchildren."
The greater Detroit
community has taken
major strides in its efforts
to support Project Re-
newal, the Israel gov-
ernment's social rehabili-
tation plan which will
help to eliminate poverty
in . 45,000 Israeli homes.
Statistics show that De-
troit leads all other
American communities
in its financial commit-
ments to help promote
the project.
Twinned with Ramle, a
community of almost 40,000
near Tel Aviv, Detroit is
exercising all efforts to urge
rehabilitation in this his-
toric town. Although lo-
cated in central Israel,
7,000 of Ra.mle's citizens are
far from the mainstream of
Israeli life. Neighborhoods
in this town are representa-
tive of the 160 that have
been specified by the Israel
government to be upgraded
by joint efforts of the gov-
ernment and world Jewry
through Project Renewal.
In the intensive five-day

mission, emphasis was
placed on Project Renewal,
and the leaders learned
about the threefold plan of
action. In addition to physi-
cal restoration of homes
which need to be de-
molished or repaired, a so-
cial and communal infras-
tructure will also be built.
And perhaps most impor-
tant is the direct participa-
tion of local residents them-
selves in the planning of
their own futures.
In addition to a day de-
voted to this extensive proj-
ect, mission participants
were briefed on Israel's set-
tlements issue by Prof.
Raanan Weitz, head of the
Jewish Agency's Rural Set-
tlement Department.
The group visited an
industrial village,
Moshav Yaad and were
briefed by former
Foreign Minister Moshe
Dayan and Minister of
Defense Ezer Weizman.
They also attended a
state dinner at the lines-
set hosted by Prime
Minister Menahem Be-
gin•
Besides Milgrom and
Frankel, participants in the
mission included Milton
Barnett, Sam Grand, David
Hermelin, Joseph and
Larry Jackier, Irving
Laker, Dr. Sheldon Mintz,
Milford Nemer, Bob Ro-
senthal, Bruce Seyburn, D.
