BETTER BUSINESS LENNY LIEBERMAN Bar-Ilan University Begins 25th Year, Aged Among 8,000 Students Enrolled RAMAT-GAN, Israel — A total of 8,000 students have begun the new aca- demic year at Bar-Ilan Uni- versity. This marks the start of the university's 25th academic year, which will be celebrated by var- ious public and academic events. Among the students are 350 senior citizens who are participating as auditers in regular courses. The pro- gram, supported by the Brookdale Foundation of New York, is the first of its kind at an Israeli university to provide senior citizens with the opportunity to take part in regular academic courses and so broaden their cultural and intellectual horizons. The program is in its second year. According to Prof. Emanuel Rackman, president of Bar-Ilan, the program will provide schol- arships for students who wish to establish contact with older people — indi- viduals or couples — and provide educational aid, companionship and inter- est, and information on services available to older people. This will be in co- operation with the various governmental and munici- pal agencies dealing with the welfare of older people. Scholarships are also being provided for stu- dents in the School of So- cial Work who wish to specialize in gerontology. The Institute for Dias- pora Education at Bar-Ilan, named after its late chan- cellor, Rabbi Joseph H. Lookstein, is expanding its existing program and ac- tivities this year. The uni- versity is activating the In- stitute for Holocaust Studies. Master's degree programs have been ap- proved in geography and criminology, as well as PhD degree programs in political studies and criminology. The School of Social Work has a new area of specializa- tion — a retraining pro- gram for Project Renewal. In education, there will be a program for the training of teachers for teachers' seminaries.
