Bible Scholar Dr. Sandmel Dies,
Aided Jewish-Christian Relations

CINCINNATI — Dr.
Samuel Sandmel, a recog-
nized authority on early
Christianity, who lectured
extensively on the theologi-
cal and biblical affinities
between Judaism and
Christianity, died Nov. 4 at
age 68.
Sandmel had many
s published by the
ne State University
Press in Detroit and spoke
at that city's Temple Beth
El and at other communal
affairs.
Dr. Sandmel's New Tes-
tament scholarship and
teaching skills fostered ad-
vances in the field of
Jewish-Christian relations.
Dr. Sandmel retired
earlier this year as a dis-
tinguished service pro-
fessor of Bible and Hel-
lenistic literature at He-
brew Union College -
Jewish Institute of Reli-

gion. He taught at the Re-
form rabbinical college
for 26 years.
He wrote 17 books, his
newest being "Philo of
Alexandria," published by
the Oxford University
Press, - and reviewed in The
Jewish News July 13, 1979.
Among Dr. Sandmel's
distinctions was his service
as the first Jewish editor to
head a team of 28 scholars
that issued "The New
English Bible With the
Apocrypha: Oxford Study
Edition," iii1976.
Scholars at seminaries
and universities in Ohio
instituted an annual
Mid-American Scholars
dialogue to honor his
work on the project.

Pritzker, a lawyer whose
family has been noted as
one of the wealthiest in the

Hyatt Hotel chain, died Oct.
31 at age 75.

— Golda Kukier, a veteran
leader of the Btind, has died
at age 73.
Born in Poland, she was
active in the Buenos Aires
Jewish community and re-
presented the Bund in the
cultural department of the
AsoCiacion Mutual Argen-
tina (AMIA) a 35,000-
member Ashkenazi group,
the largest Jewish organ-
ization in the country.
In 1964, Ms. Kukier was
the first woman to be
elected to the executive
board of the AMIA. She was
best known for her activi-
ties in behalf of the Yitzhak
Peretz Yiddish_ School.
