Gale Al Capp Dies, Created Comic CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Alfred Gerald Caplin, bet- ter known as Al Capp, creator of the Li'l Abner comic strip, died Nov. 5 at age 70. At its height, the strip was syndicated in 900 newspapers around the world, including the Detroit News. In November 1977, when Mr. Caplin retired due to illness, the comic ap- peared in 400 papers.
