TEL AVIV — Isaac Stern
is one of the best violinists of
the world. He is also a Jew
with a warm heart who is
doing a lot to develop the
cultural and artistic life in
Israel.

Stern opened this season
of the Israeli Philharmonic
Orchestra with the famous
conductor Zubin Mehta.
After the first concert the
Municipality of Tel Aviv ar-
ranged a reception in the
Tel Aviv Museum. Stern
dealt in his address with the
situation in Israel: the
clashes in the government,
the functioning of the
Cabinet, the actions of Gush
Emunim by establishing il-
legal settlements in the
administered territories
have an effect on world
Jewry and some Jews lose
the desire to come under
such circumstances to Is-
rael.
Some
newspapers
criticized Stern for his re-
marks. Following Stern's
remarks, the chairman of
the World Jewish Congress
in Israel, Shnew Zalman
Abramow, spoke and said
that even "national" Jews
like Isaac Stern are today
disappointed by the state of
Israel.
Stern invited a group of
Israeli journalists to his
hotel to explain his
statement. In an inter-
view with Raffael Bashan
of Yediot Acharonot he
said that the leaders of
Israel must be ready to
listen to criticism voiced
by people who are doing
something for Israel. His
remarks were aimed at
improving things in Is-
rael.
He said that during his
travels all over the world he
had only pleasure if he
praised Israel and its
achievements in many
fields. He used to be proud
about the intellectual and
idealistic power of Israel.

But today the world-wide
sympathy for Israel is sw-
inging over to the Arabs, he
said. It is very important
that Israel should start to
see this new situation in the
world and try to improve its
prestige and image.
In 1948, when the state
of Israel was founded, we
Jews were proud that our
national dream had been
realized," Stern said. "Now
some of us are doubting if it
really was realized. We are
losing friends. Anti-
Semitism is rising in
Europe and in the rest of the
world. The visit of
black leader Jessie Jackson
in Israel and the daily re-
ports of the Israeli press
about the situation in the
country cause damage. I
have no intention what-
soever to do the same to the
precious state of Israel, but I
have to say what I feel and
hope, that my words will be
heeded and something will
be done to improve things."

ZUBIN MEHTA

Mehta, who is one of
the best conductors in the
world, is the musical di-
rector of the Israeli
Philharmonic Orchestra
and never neglects his
duties towards the or-
chestra. For 10 years he
has visited Israel at least
twice a year, conducting
two series of concerts.
Though he is the perma-
nent conductor of the
New York Symphony Or-
chestra, he cherished his
sympathy and love for
the Israeli orchestra and
its public.
The Israeli Philharmonic
Orchestra was founded in
1936 by the famous Jewish
violinist Bronislaw Huber-
man. He brought to it the
best musicians from Ger-
many, who were expelled by
the Nazi regime. Mehta has
improved the orchestra,
consolidated its sections
and raised its quality to the
highest standard.
The Israeli Journalists'
Association arranged a
banquet for Mehta in the
Guest House of the Or-
chestra.
The chairman of the
Jewish Agency and World
Zionist Organization
Executives, Arye Dulzin,
pointed out Mehta's vast ac-
tivities for Israel. He re-
vealed that Mehta had
proposed to the govern-
ment of India to invite the
Israeli orchestra for a series
of concerts and to change its
policy towards Israel.
The chairman of the
orchestra's management,
Daniel Binyamini, told
