It has a membership of approx- imately 2,500 of which 80 percent are non-Jews. A great number of govern- ment leaders belong and its main function is promoting exchange programs with Is- rael as well as public rela- tions. A DUSSELDORF community with a rela- tively small Jewish popula- tion of 1,700, but very active in support of Israel projects and one of the top com- munities in the country. However, the cantor is ex- cellent and performs most needed services. This is home of Herman Lewy, chief editor for the past 20 years of the Allgemeine Judische Wochenzeitung. He is one of the top journalists in the country. The paper has a readership of 32,000 of which 70 percent are non- Jews. Lewy left Germany in the late 1930s and spent time in a camp, as did his wife. They were reunited after the war and he felt it was his duty to go back to his home and try and help rebuild the com- munity. To this day he is not sorry for making this deci- sion.
