Quota Advocates Denounced
Editor, The Jewish News:
When I first noticed in a
V of the American Jewish
Jeklies Mrs. Coretta
King's statement, "On
Black-Jewish Relations," I
assumed that it was some
indication on the part of the
wife of the great civil rights
leader Dr. Martin Luther
King to ease the strained
black-Jewish relationship
caused by Andrew Young's
resignation, immediately
followed by Reverend Jesse
Jackson's brutal attack on
the American Jews, accus-
ing them in the ambas-
sador's downfall.
However, I was deeply
disappointed when Mrs.
King in her article just like
Rev. Jackson, immediately
refers to affirmative action
as the cause for the deter-
ioration of black-Jewish re-
lations. Yes, we Jews, sup-
ported this decision of the

New Job Guide
Issued for Blind
The Department of Civil
Service, in cooperation with
the Mid-Michigan Center
for the Blind, has produced
a Braille version of the pub-
lication, "A Handicapper's
Guide to State Employ-
ment."
The brochure, which out-
lines in detail the steps by
which a handicapped person
enters the classified service,
has also been produced in
audio form. The seven-
minute tape will be a reg-
ular feature on WKAR
Radio's "Talking Book"
program.
The Braille brochure and
the tape will be distributed
by the Department of Civil
Service to the Commission
for the Blind and to blind
consumer groups. Addi-
tionally, copies of the
Braille brochure and the
tape will be available from
public libraries, the Michi-
gan School for the Blind and
the State of Michigan Li-
brary.

Supreme Court of the
United States, not as ra-
cists, but because as Jews
we had very tragic experi-
ences for centuries,
throughout the world, as a
result of "quota" systems.
I, personally, remember
in the Czar's Russia the
tragedy of being the only
Jew in a class of 55 stu-
dents, due to the "numerus
clausus" of only two percent
for Jews. I also remember
during the 1920s, the lead-
ing eastern universities
with their "silent quota" for
Jews, when many brilliant
Jewish students were not
accepted into their medical
faculties, although those
students had received their
BA degrees in the same
universities.
Of course, this did not
stop those students from
becoming MDs; the chil-
dren of "The People of
the Book" entered uni-
versities abroad, thus
reaching their goals.
Ironically, the discrimi-
nations, the quotas, the per-
centages, against which the
American blacks fought for
years, with some help from
the Jews — the first
president of the NAACP
was a Jew — the same
blacks are now trying to re-
verse the situation and force
a "quota" system on the
Jews in the universities.
