THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
38 Friday, November 2, 1919
The Best of Everything)
(Continued from Page 37)
growing in the Detroit area,
surprise visits from Pat
Paulsen and Mike Binder
among others have been on
stage at Friday's Comedy
Castle.
ORIGINALLY
KNOWN as Familiar
Faces, five-piece group is
now called "Celebrity" and
appearing at Chuck Muer's
Top of the Pontch, 25th floor
of the Hotel Pontchartrain
for listening and dancing
. . . All members, four guys
and a gal, take turns in the
solo vocal spotlight as well
as all providing class har-
mony.
IRVING GUTTMAN
has been released from Pro-
vidence Hospital . . . The
co-owner with wife Rose and
son Jerry of Irving's
Delicatessen-Restaurant,
Greenfield and 11 Mile,
endured two pperations .. .
one necessitating the ampu-
tation of a leg below the
knee . . . and the other con-
tinuing more amputation
six inches above the knee.
The leg Irving has to sup-
port his body now was
broken during World War II
after escaping from a Nazi
concentration camp and
hiding out in the Polish
woods . . . It was held to-
gether and mended by two
pieces of tree bark and a
bandage.
When he gets stronger,
customers can be assured
that Irving will be back at
the restaurant . . . getting
around whatever way he
can . . . You don't hold down
people like Irving Guttman
. . . Both he and Rose know
what it's like to suffer in
concentration camps . . . For
her, this latest ordeal has
been a very worrisome and
wearing out ordeal.
Now begins another life
. . . that of making do with
one leg . . . Irving is strong
. . . and very proud . . . He'll
be back . . . and as good as
ever before.
MONTE'S Restaurant
on Woodward between 111/2
and 12 Mile Rds., is a sur-
prisingly good eatery with
only 15 seats including
three window table tops and
high stools . . . It's owned by
Monte and Esther Draper,
who both used to work at
Darby's on W. Seven Mile
Rd. . . . met there and got
married . . . Monte was a
cook in the kitchen . . . and
Esther a waitress in the
Skylight Room Lounge.
They now each put in 75
hours a week . . . and have
had the place three years
come Dec. 2.
It's not a fancy dining spot
by any means . . . strictly
sandwiches like the Super
Bird, egg dishes like the
Great Western Omelette,
side dishes like fried
potatoes with skins, etc. . . .
But for cleanliness, tasti-
ness and quality, Monte's
gets a high rating from so
many who continually come
back.
