Chicago Leaders
Protest to Spanish
Consul on Arafat
CHICAGO (JTA) — The
Consulate General of Spain
to the Midwest told leaders
of the Public Affairs Com-
mittee (PAC) of the Jewish
United Fund (JUF) that
Spain would recognize Is-
rael "once a comprehensive
peace was established in the -
Middle East." That state,
ment by Consul Luis _-
Martinez-Agullo was chal-
lenged by PAC leaders, who
had come to register their
protest of Spain's non-
recognition of Israel while
last month giving an "offi-
cial reception" to visiting
Palestine Liberation
Organization leader Yasir
Arafat:
The PAC group, led by
Robert Schrayer, JUF
president, and Neil Green-
baum, vice president, told
Agullo that a true interest
in Middle East peace cannot
be reconciled with de facto
recognition of the PLO,
which is pledged to destroy
Israel. "Arafat's welcome by
a NATO member was an
unconscionable act, con-
tradictory to the goals of
peace," the PAC leaders
said.
Similar concerns wree
also voiced by leaders of the
Midwest Chapter of the
American-Israel Chamber
of Commerce, who further
advised Agullo of letters
and wires sent to the
Spanish Ambassador to the
U.S., Jose Llado, by officers
of major area firms. Most of
these letters made the point
that grass roots reaction to
Spain's reception for Arafat
would reduce trade and
tourism.
Leaders Plan
Anti-Crime
Rally in Brooklyn
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Plans for a city-wide "war
on crime" and a possible
mass anti-crime rally at
City Hall have been pro-
posed by a coalition of black
and Hasidic leaders in the
Crown Heights section of
Brooklyn in response to the
murder of a rabbi Last
Thursday who was enroute
to services.
Police reported that no
arrests had been made in
the slaying of Rabbi David
Okinov, a recent emigre
from the Soviet Union, am' Ail
that they were making an1111P
investigation of the killing,
Which apparently was
motivated by robbery and
not race.
The area, world center of
the Lubavitcher Movement,
has been racially tense for
years, a factor leading to
formation last May of the
coalition.
Hard-Line View
CAIRO (ZINS) — Egyp-
tian Vice President Hosni
Mubarak believes that Is-
rael will return the Golan
Heights, the West Bank,
Gaza and Jerusalem to
Arab control.
Mubarak cites the ex-
perience of the Sinai
negotiations and world pub-
lic opinion.
