THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Winkelman's Co-Founder Dies Isadore Winkelman, co- founder with his late brother, Leon, of Winkel- man Stores Inc., women's ready-to-wear clothing chain with more than 80 stores in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois, died Oct. 20 at age 77. Born in Manistique in the Upper Peninsula, the son of a Jewish shopkeeper, Mr. inkelman was intrigued big city life and moved to Detroit in his teens. In 1922, with the support of his family, Mr. Winkel- man opened the first of what was to have been a chain of men's clothing stores. How- ever, he realized there was a bigger market in women's wear and he and his brother began thier women's clo- thing operation. Coming from a kosher home — his mother, Hat-- tie, had to import meat by boat from Minnesota and Sabbath services were held in the Winkelman 0 Sidney Stark Sidney S. Stark, owner of Leonard's Hardware in Warren for the past 16 years, died Oct. 18 at age 60. A native Detroiter, Mr. Stark was a member of Per- fection Lodge of the Masons and the Warren Chamber of Commerce.
