Many are led by charismatic leaders, authoritarian at best, to- talitarian at worst, who often present themselves and are accepted by their followers as - messianic Rabbi A. James Rudin, the American Jewish Committee's assistant na- tional director of interreli- gious affairs and an expert on cults, was in Detroit last week for an interreligious dialogue. "People seldom join cults for ideological or theological reasons. Practically all seek to overcome a sense of es- trangement and loneli- ness. Cult leaders offer unconditional love and acceptance within caring communities. "The psychic and physical price paid is constantly es- calated. Drop out of school or work; leave your family and move to the commu- nity's building or settle- ment; allow the cult to dic- tate work assignments, diet, sleep and sexual habits; cede to a leader total authority to grant forgive- ness and grace, define sin, repentance and salvation, and finally decide what is true and what is false. "A cult member is never physically alone, intellec- tually in doubt, or emotion- ally troubled. He or she sur- renders critical faculties, previous belief systems and sometimes, as in Guyana, his or her life — all for the leader. "The AJCommittee has long been concerned with the challenge of the cults and their attraction for a significant number of Jews, mostly between the ages of 18 and 30. In 1976, it pub- lished a content analysis of the basic teaching book of Sun Myung Moon's Unifica- tion Church. Prepared by the Interreligious Affairs Department, this study documented the group's bla- tant anti-Semitism." Men'sClubs videocrdFt, inc.
