Balfour Gets Acclaim

A departure from a long
established policy of mak-
ing the Balfour Concerts
sponsored by the Zionist
Organization of Detroit
symphonic affairs gained
enthusiastic approval from
a large audience Sunday
night, at Ford Auditorium.
Paul Zim, the nationally
popular singer, who also has
gained a high ranking role
as a cantor, gave the new
Balfour Celebration im-
petus with a program of
cantorial selections, popu-
lar Yiddish songs, Israeli
Hebrew selections and
other lyrics.
Possessing a powerful
voice, Zim also proved an
inspiration for an audience
that not only cheered him
but on one occasion stood for
a minute to express
enthusiasm over his re-
markable demonstration of
an art in which he has be-
come a master. When it re-
quired, he danced; when he
desired it he led the audi-
ence in mass singing. From
the moment he opened the
program he was cheered for
establishing a cheerful
mood.
Three times he sang
songs written for him by
the other program par-
ticipant, Sy Kleinman.
They sang one of these
songs together as a con-
cluding number.
Kleinman is - a good
storyteller. He comments
and appeals for Jewish
loyalties and devotions as
much as he narrates his
Jewish stories. He kept the
audience literally in
stitches. He didn't even
have refrain fiom acclaim
when he resorted often to
unnecessary dialect. His
application of dialect to
Chelm stories certainly was
inappropriate. Did anyone
ever hear a Chelmer Yid
speak in Yiddish stage
dialect which has always
been corrupted?
In the main it was a good
concert, with the added
lustre of the accompanying
music of Hal Gordon's Or-
chestra.
Appeals for increased ac-
tion to support the Zionist
