E DETROIT JEWISH NEWS One Israeli Army Colonel Is Breaking Male Barriers By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent , , TEL AVIV — Among the officers who are finishing their studies at Israel's highest military academy is Col. Maggi. She is the first to complete a course in mili- tary logistics at the academy. On her uniform are the wings of a military ilot. Men in the High Corn- mand have to pass courses at this academy but not women. Maggi was not ready to accept such a situa- tion. She insisted on being the first woman in such a course. "I have never chosen an easy way in life," she said. "A course in the academy enables high- ranking officers to better analyze all factors in order to solve military problems." Maggi is living in a re- nted apartment near Tel Aviv. Her family came to Is- rael from Morocco when Maggi was a child. The fam- ily lives in Jerusalem and Maggi loves Jerusalem. When she enlisted in the Is- raeli army, she did not think that her connection with the army would last more than two years. She finished an officers course and was stationed at a parachute base. Her service at this base induced her to stay in the army. She liked the paratroopers. In 1967, the army sought women offi- cers who knew French to instruct soldiers from the Ivory Coast. Maggi ac- cepted the offer. She went to the Ivory Coast and trained girls from all tribes. The girls also learned to read and write, sewing and nurs- ing children. Maggi headed the parade of 600 black girls on the Ivory Coast's Independence Day. The girls had to put their hair into nets in order to wear the military berets. Returning to Israel, Maggi trained girl recruits. Afterwards, she headed a course for group-officers, then returned to the parat- roop staff and was in charge of the officq, of the IDF Chief Parachute Officer Com- mand. Later, Maggi became de- commander of the cen- 1 training base for women soldiers and then commanded a special school for advanced instructors. Maggi thinks that a commander has to combine qualities of leadership and communication. She always had the best relations with her soldier girls. She passed several parachute courses. As the first woman in the military academy, she felt a bit awkward in the begin- ning. The men had difficul- ties getting accustomed to her. But when they knew Maggi well, they liked her and treated her on an equal footing. They even would consult her about military and personal problems.
