South African Zionists Are
Re-Appraising Their Work
By SOLLY PRESS
(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)
JOHANNESBURG — A
new mood of reappraisal has
surfaced in the South Afri-
can Jewish community.
Itz
Kalamanowitz,
chairman of the S.A. Zionist
Federation, questions
whether the community
still deserves its reputation
for being the best organized
in the Jewish world, and
whether its staunch loyalty
to its heritage and values is
not a basking in the re-
flected glory of past
achievements. "South Afri-
ca's standing within the
world Zionist movement
remains high — but I won-
der if this situation doesn't
stem from the very poor
standards prevailing
elsewhere."
The young federation
chairman points to the fact
that less than the majority
of Jewish emigres from
South Africa has found its
way to Israel. The public's
response to even top-quality
hasbarah (information)
presentations has been
apathetic. Kalamanowitz
perceives "an unhealthy
snobbery and a degree of
philistinism absent from
this community in former
years."
Communal structures
need more than
attendance at monthly
committee meetings, says
Kalamanowitz, stressing:
"We require leaders of
broad vision and intellec-
tual depth who set an
example of total in-
volvement and who are
prepared to sacrifice
their time and energy. It
is this spirit of self-
sacrifice which appears
to be in increasing short
supply."
Mendel Kaplan, head of
the country's Israel United
Appeal, sees South African
Zionism against the
backdrop of the world
movement. We have to rec-
ognize that while we have
created the miracle of the
Third Commonwealth of Is-
rael in our times, we also
have a permanent Western
Diapora that under foresee-
able circumstances will not
migrate to Israel. This is
nothing new in Jewish his-
tory, but unless we accept it
as a starting point, all
analyses and debate will be
fruitless and irrelevant."
Kaplan sees two goals in
the Diaspora-Israel rela-
tionship. One is to change
the percentage of Jews liv-
ing outside Israel vis-a-vis
Jews living in Israel. The
other goal is to care about
the identity of every Jew
wherever he lives. --
"We can achieve both
goals by creating an ideol-
ogy which encompasses the
total Jewish people and
utilizes their skills inside
and outside of Israel. We
can do this," continues Kap-
lan, "by an understanding
that the change in the ideol-
ogy of Zionism involves an
appreciation of a concern
with Israel which could
start with Jewish educa-
tion, goes on through joint
Diaspora-Israel partner-
ships in the fields of culture,
science, economics, and
ends with a minority in
final aliya."
Let not the wise man
glory in his wisdom.

Russian Bias Exposed
In a nationally syndi-
cated column which ap-
peared in the Detroit News
on Oct. 11, George F. Will
exposed the historic anti-
Semitism of the Soviet
Union.
In an article entitled
"Soviet Anti-Semitism Has
Viper's Sting," Will stated
in part:
"Anti-Semitism is as tra-
ditional in Russia as is
tyranny. Under Czar
Nicholas I, 12-year-old
Jewish boys were drafted
for 25-year terms,
presumably to teach them
to be more careful next time
when selecting their par-
ents.
"But anti-Semitism re-
cently has been inten-
sified under Brezhnev.
Forty years ago, in one of
the clarifying acts of
modern politics, the
Soviet Union and its Nazi
allies were carving up
Poland. Today, it is pru-
dent to notice how the
current anti-Semitic
campaign clarifies our
perception of the men in
the Kremlin.
