30 Friday, October 19, 1919 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Danny Raskin's LISTENING POST AMONG ONE OF the most diversified jewelry op- erations around, started from the back of a linen truck over 20 years ago .. . It was just "Get it from Al Kaftan" then . . . and in the basement of his house .. . The recent opening of Al Kay Jewelers on Southfield, between 11 and 12 Mile, is the dream of many years for Al . . . and quite a transfor- mation into 2,900 square feet . . . of an excellent selec- tion with just about every- thing in the world of jewelry . . . plus a mamouth 48-ton vault encased in a. foot- and-a-half of steel and poured cement. The staff is excited, too . . . There's Al .. . his sister Edee Moss, nephew Jerome "Jerry" Moss, Bunny Ross, Bruce Weiss, Chuck Kopel, engraver Ken Kowaleski and even Al's rriother, Esther Kaftan, who comes in daily doing her public re- lationS bit, making custom- ers feel at home and answer- ing the telephone. Bruce is foreman of the shop at Al Kay Jewelers and its diamond setter . . . Jerry is a diamonologist and ap- praiser. The store is so unicpie that it isn't unusual for someone to bring a photo or picture of a ring, pen- dant, cufflinks, anything, and have it duplicated .. . It has its own engraving shop, does its own cast- ing and its own mount- ings (waxing and rubber) ... Different pieces made from wax are shown to people before the real thing is done ... lEven in- vestments in diamonds, bought or sold, are hand- led by Jerry. Al Kay Jewelers doesn't stop here . . . it makes one of a kind pieces (like the corned beef sandwich Iry Greenberg of Plaza Deli wears on a chain around his neck) . . . does all kinds of remodeling and repairing of old jewelry . . . and is among the very few if any in the city that engraves Lucite. There's hardly anything in jewelry that Al Kay Jewelers doesn't have in stock . . . and if it isn't on the shelves, you can be sure Al will get it for the customer . . . Everything is dis- counted. Al Kay Jewelers' reputa- tion has become so big that it is even doing work for other jewelers.
