THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 24 Friday, October 19, 1919 Britain Rebuked CONGREGATION BETH ACHIM PRESENTS An Evening of Superb Entertainment SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1979 AT 8:00 P.M. RON ELIRAN Israel's International Star of four Conlinents BLACKPOOL (JTA) — The pro-Arab shift in Brit- ain's Middle East policy drew a sharp, if veiled, re- sponse from Shlomo Argov, the new Israel Ambassador. He spoke at a luncheon of the Conservative Friends of Israel, one of the fringe meetings at the annual con- ference of the Conservative Party. Referring to Britain's re- luctance to sell North Sea oil to Israel, he noted that because of the return of the Sinai oil fields to Egypt, Is- rael had sought oil elsewhere but had so far met with disappointing re- sponses. Alluding to Britain's sale of 200 Chieftain tanks to Jordan, he said that the Arab world bristled with ever more arms and threats. W.B. Elections to Be Cancelled? JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Military Government may cancel the municipal elections scheduled next year in the West Bank for fear of a Palestine Libera- tion Organization sweep. Most of the offices of the mayors who won in the previous elections in April 1976 are presently staffed by PLO supporters. The fear is that a PLO sweep could cut even further the chances that local Arab leaders would participate in the autonomy talks.
