Honigman is a former
member of the board of the
AJC-IEF Detroit Service
Group and the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation.
Honigman was born in
Russia on Oct. 25, 1904, and
migrated with his parents
to the U.S. in 1911. He lives
in the West Bloomfield area
with his wife, Edith (Hor-
witz), whom he married in
1931. They have a son,
Daniel M., and a daughter,
Mrs. Edward C. Levy, Jr.,
and five grandchildren.
He graduated from the
University of Michigan
Law School in 1926 with
the highest scholastic
rating in his class. He
commenced practice in
Detroit with a law firm
whose senior partner,
Alex J. Groesbeck, was
then governor of Michi-
gan. He is currently the
senior partner in the
60-man law firm of Hon-
igman, Miller, Schwartz
and Cohn.
He has long been active in
the field of improvement of
the law with special em-
phasis on procedural as-
pects of litigation. He
served for many years as
chairman of the civil proce-
dure committee of the State
Bar of Michigan and as
chairman of the civil proce-
dure committee of the Judi-
cial Conference of Michi-
gan. He played a key role in
drafting and the enactment
into law of the basic
structure for court proce-
dures in this state
encompassed in the Revised
Judicature Act of 1961 and
the General Court Rules of
1963.
He is co-author of the
book entitled "Michigan
Court Rules Annotated"
which along with its pre-
decessor, of which he was
sole author, has been the
standard text in this, field
and may be found in the li-
brary of every judge and
trial lawyer in the state.
His royalties have at all
times been donated to the
Michigan Bar Foundation
for use in research for im-
provement in the adminis-
tration of justice. Through-
out his professional career
he has published many arti-
cles in legal publications.
In 1968, he was chair-
man of a state-wide citi-
zens committee to urge a
state constitutional
amendment to change
the method for selection

sary signatures to place the
proposal on the ballot, that

practice, he has been
active in business af-
fairs, having served as an
officer and director of a
number of publicly
owned corporations. He
also has 'served as a di-
rector of the Detroit
Board of Commerce.
For many years he was
active in support of the Re-
publican Party and in 1958,
he was its nominee for state
attorney general.

adopted by a vote of the
people. ,
He was elected by the
State Bar to serve on the
Judicial Tenure Commis-
sion thus created from its
inception in 1968. He served
on the commission until he
retired in 1978, at which
time he was chairman of the
commission.
He was also instrumental
in the creation of the Law
Revision Commission by
the Legislature to make
recommendations for im-
provements in the law. For
the past 10 years, he has
served as chairman of that
commission by appointment
of the Legislature.
In 1967, he received a
special citation award from
the University of Michigan
designated as the "Ses-
quicentennial Award" in
recognition of his achieve-
ments as a "lawyer, scholar
and public servant." In
1969, the University of
Michigan conferred upon
him the honorary degree of
Doctor of Laws.
In 1974, he received the
"Herbert Harley Award"
from the American Judica-
ture Society in recognition
of his outstanding contribu-
tion to the improvement of
the administration of jus-
