Harris Lauds
Zangwill's Work
in WSU Volume

THE
1

Israel Zangwill, George
Eliot and Benjamin Disraeli
are among the noted
authors of the 19th Century
British Golden Age
evaluated in "British Short
Fiction in the -19th Cen-
t tury" by Wendell B. Harris
(Wayne State University
Press).
-''
.
Harris wrote: ". . . Israel
angwill's 'Children of the
etto' (1892), 'Ghetto
agedies' (1893), and
'Dreamers of the Ghetto'
o(1898) attempted to do for
the Judaic community what
Irish authors had been
doing for their homeland
'since early in the century.
"Zangwill employed an
impressive variety of forms:
the first of these volumes is
a set of linked sketches; the
second is made up of two
tales drawing on traditional
lore and two brief but pow-
erful short stories; the lon-
gish tales of the third are 'a
Chronicle of Dreamers, who
have arisen in the Ghetto
from its establishment in
the 16th Century to its slow
breaking-up in our own
day.'"

Beasts of the Field, the
Bible as Source," the

from her later work ex-
hibited at the Israel
Museum in Israel and the
