Children Focus
of Mall Events

A variety of special
events, including puppet
shows, a magician, story tel-
ling for children and films
and seminars will highlight
the International Year of
the Child celebration at
Northland Mall through
Sunday.
The International Year of
the Child celebration is
jointly sponsored by the
mall and Encyclopedia
Britannica — USA.
Michael Thornton, magi-
cian, will perform two
shows Saturday. At 1:30
p.m. Sharon Newman, star
of the WDIV-TV show,
"Double Dip Sunday," will
present a puppet show. This
will immediately precede a
2 p.m. panel discussion,
"Who's Raising My Chil-
dren, the Professional, the
Media or Me?"
A series of films will be
shown on a rotating basis
beginning at 9:30 a.m.,
10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Re-
productions of the winning
entries from a world-wide
competition of children's art
will be on display during the
event.

Somerset Mall will celeb-
rate its 10th anniversary
with a benefit for the De-
troit Historical Museum
costume collection 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 3 in the mall. The eve-
ning will include an auc-
tion, fashion show and
music provided by Martin
Scot Kosins and the Pas-
tiche Wind Quintet. There
is a charge. Tickets are
available at the Detroit His-
torical Museum.
The mall will be the scene
of a benefit for the Michigan
Chapter of the National
Foundation for Ileitis and
Colitis 7 p.m. Saturday.
Fashions will be pro-
vided by Hughes and
Hatcher. There will be a
cocktail party, buffet
dinner, fashion show and
dancing, with music by
the Fenby-Carr Or-
chestra.

Driker Named

Attorney Eugene Driker
has been appointed by
Mayor Coleman Young to
the Detroit Police Commis-
sion, replacing Avern Cohn
who was sworn in this week
as a Federal judge. Driker is
