On Shemin" Atzeret we
eat in the sukka but we do
not pronounce the usual
benediction that is said be-
fore beginning to eat in the
sukka.
Jews in the Diaspora
usually add another day to
holidays. This means that
an extra day is added to the
seven days in which we eat
in the sukka. However,
Jews in the Diaspora also
_observe the day of Shemini
Atzeret as a separate holi-

day when one does not eat in
the sukka (because it is a
day after Sukkot).
Therefore, one eats in the
sukka since it is not forbid-
den to eat in the sukka on
Shemini Atzeret, but one
does not make the benedic-
tion for the sukka since the
kidush which is recited be-
fore eating on the evening of
Shemini Atzeret contains
mention that it is the festi-
val of Shemini Atzeret.
Also, the "She-
heheyanu" benedic-
tion is recited indicating
that one is experiencing a
new holiday.
On Shemini Atzeret we do
not use the lulav while we
eat in the sukka.
Technically, Jews outside
Jerusalem only used the
lulav on the first day of
Sukkot. Our practice of
using the lulav on seven
days of Sukkot (except for
the Sabbath) is only because
of the special rule of the
rabbis who wanted Jews to
remember that the lulav
was used in the Temple in
Jerusalem for seven days.
Hence, an eighth day is
not necessary for the lulay.
Also, if the lulav was used
on Shemini Atzeret, it
would indicate that it is not
a special holiday but just
one of the days of Hol Ha-
Moed Sukkot.
Harry Lindenbaum Donates
Ambulance to Israel's MDA
An ambulance with
two-way radio communica-
tion, oxygen resuscitator
and other essential first-aid
supplies was donated to
Magen David Adorn, Is-
rael's emergency health
service s by Harry Linden-
baum. With his gift (addi-
tional funds were also do-
nated for MDA emergency
medical services and the Is:
rael Blood Bank), Linden-
baum honors the memory of
his wife, Reva, who shared
with him many contribu-
tions to vital causes.
MDA's Pikuach Nefesh
Award was presented to
Lindenbaum at a recent
dedication ceremony by
Anna Slomovitz, officer of
the Michigan Region,
American Red Magen
David for Israel, in
grateful recognition of their
splendid contribution and
for helping Magen David
Adorn to alleviate suffering,
pain and save precious lives
and to bring hope for a
brighter, healthier future to
Israel's ailing, injured, aged
and newborn . . ."
The Lindenbaums were
married 36 years. Mrs. Lin-
denbaum, who died five
years ago, was a major con-
tributor to cancer research
programs conducted by
Hadassah and the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
The Lindenbaums gave
$100,000 for the establish-
ment of the Hadassah
Nurses' Center in
Jerusalem. Locally, the
United Hebrew Schools li-
brary in the school building
was financed by the Lin-
denbaums. A special fund
established by them pro-
vides for Midrasha schol-
arships.

PARIS (JTA) — Both the
French Communist Party
and France's New Right"
have been accused of anti-
Semitism. Two left-wing
French writers, Alain- de
Sedouy and Andre Harris,
who published a book on
"The Jews in France," last
week accused the French
Communist Party and its
leader, Georges Marchais,
of trying to whitewash the
Soviet Union's official
state-imposed anti-
Semitism.
At the same time, a
right-wing philosopher,
Bernard-Henry Levy, ac-
cused the New Right of try-
ing to revive "the anti-
Semitism of far gone days"
and erasing the memory of
the Holocaust and Nazi
crimes.

LONDON — Five Jewish
cemeteries in Czechos-
lovakia have been
scheduled to be demolished
by the end of the year, ac-
cording to the International
Council of Jews from

Jewish cemeteries de-
molished in Czechoslovakia
since 1977.
