THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

WZO-Agency Budget Slashed

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

"AT LAST WE have a
place to call our own," says
Larry Lieberman, former
Detroiter, who with brother
Arnold and their Mon-
tebello •Corp. have com-
pleted building of an
ultra-modern synagogue on
Merritt Island, Fla. . . . It is
in honor of their parents,
ex-Detroiters Betty and Hy
Lieberman of nearby Cocoa
Beach . . . Materials and
minimal construction
charges were the congrega-
tion's only cost as Larry's
and Arnie's way of honoring
of Betty and Hy.
Temple Israel has a
membership of about 300
. In previous years it held
services in the Grace United
Methodist Church on Mer-
ritt Island.
TIME FLIES . . .
and already it's nearly time
for the Bnai David Men's
Club Pre-Thanksgiving
Feather Party, 8 p.m. Nov.
17 . . . Co-chairmen are Iry
Abramson and Harry
Newman . . . For ticket info,
call the synagogue office,
557-8210.
ABOUT MOM . . . Mrs.
M. Raskin . . . She's umteen
times better, thank you .. .
and we still have hopes of
her inviting us back again
for those great Friday night
dinners.
GIVE A BIG HAND .. .
to people in the community
like Irene and Nathantight
. . . who open their doors on
Yom Kippur night for
guests to come and break
fast . . . It's the friendly
thing to do . . . and some-
thing which goes unnoticed
in the banding of communal
life togetherness.
SID NICKIN may be a
buesiness tycoon . . . but as
amateur magician at hospi-
tals, homes for the aged,
etc., he's a king . . . How-
ever, Sid's biggest claim to
fame, according to many, is
in a simple culinary art .. .
He's a topnocher they say at
making eggs and onions.
RABBI JOSHUA
SPERKA will be honored
Oct. 23 by Knights of
Pythias, Detroit No. 55, at
its Castle Hall on Coolidge
between 11 and 12 Mile in
Berkley . . . Will be open to
members, friends and rela-
tives . . . Rabbi Sperka is a
member of Detroit No. 55
and has given spiritual
services to the lodge and its
membership . . . Chairman
is Mayer Gordon, 961-7704.
ERNEST DRUCKER,
dapper bossman at Execu-
tive Custom Shirtmakers in
Birmingham, will hold an
all-day fashion seminar, 8
a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 17, at
Southfield Athletic Club on
Evergreen . . . He'll talk of
proper dress and present
fashion trends for men
(naturally including the
world of shirts, of which few
people know more than Er-
nest) . . . and head question
and answer sessions.
Sounds very interesting

and fashion plate Ernest is
up on today and even tomor-
row's styles.
MORRIE SCHWARTZ
has severed connections be-
tween his Sunoco Station on
Southfield and 10 Mile and
AAA road service . . . Mor-
rie's ideas differ from Triple
A in the amount of hours
having to stay open among
other reasons . . . He still
has two trucks and will con-
tinue road service and
mechanical.
SANDY MYERS of
Sandra Myers Nail Clinic in
North Park Towers, was on
Ch. 7's "Morning Show" last
week, hosted by John Kelly
and Marilyn Turner .. .
Sandy exhibited her tech-
niques of nail transplants
plus what people can do at
home to beautify and keep
their nails healthy.
IN ISRAEL recently,
Free Press columnist Shir-
ley Eder had a guide of
whom she frequently
speaks . . . It was in
Jerusalem when she and
hubby Ed Slatkin asked a
question . . . Shlomo, their
guide, answered, "DV" .. .
They asked what that was,
and he said, "Don't vorry."
AFTER MAKING AN
amazing recovery from
cancer, former Detroiter
Bernie Hartstein is in town
from California, visiting
with brother Murray Hartz.
Another brother, Solas,
former owner of Baker's
Keyboard Lounge on Liver-
nois, now lives in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.
CONGRATS . to Syl-
via and Johnny Wilber on
their 52nd anniversary . .
to Marilyn and Harry Ko-
sins on anniversary number
27.
APPLEGATE SQUARE
at Northwestern and Inks-
ter, is celebrating its first
birthday . . . today till 10
p.m. . . . and tomorrow
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
LOOKING BACK ON
Columns Of Yesteryears .. .
Dec. 14, 1956 . . . "The four
Jewish students recently
appointed to head the
Wayne University Law Re-
view published three times
a year and subscribed to by
just about every Wayne law
graduate are . . . Elliot
Beitner, editor-in-chief,
Henry Baskin, managing
editor and Lee Weisenthal
and Rona (Herman) Rice,
associate editors."

A Clarification

In response to some in-
quiries, these are the facts
in relation to Papal visits to
Israel:
Pope Paul VI_ was in Is-
rael during the presidency
of Shneur Zalman Shazar.
Pope John Paul II, re-
sponding to an invitation
extended to him at the
United Nations by Israel
Ambassador Yehuda Blum,
indicated an interest in vis-
iting the Jewish state.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The budget of the Jewish
Agency and . World Zionist
Organization emissaries
will be cut by 20 percent, the
Zionist Executive decided
last week. The WZO em-
ploys 520 emissaries, with
_another 200 who are not fi-
nanced by the WZO or the
Agency.

The cuts will be im-
plemented by reducing the
number of emissaries and
funding them by the local
communities.
