Psychiatrist Will Address
Birmingham Temple Event
The Humanist Forum of
the Birmingham Temple
will present Dr. Thomas S.
Szasz, psychiatrist, author
and lecturer 8:30 p.m. Oct.
29 at the temple. He will
- speak on "Psychiatry:
Enemy of Freedom."
Born in Austria, Dr. Szasz
was graduated from the
Royal Hungarian Training
Institute in 1938. Later that
year as the Nazi invasion of
Austria threatened, the
family moved to the United
States. In 1941, Dr. Szasz
earned a BA degree at the
University of Cincinnati
and a MD degree at the
same institution in 1944,
graduating at the top of his
class.
Dr. Szasz is a professor of
psychiatry at the State
University of New York. He
maintains a private prac-
tice in psychiatry and
psychoanalysis and fre-
quently serves as an expert
witness in court on behalf of
DR. THOMAS SZASZ
individuals injured by
psychiatric interventions.
He is a member of the
American Humanist
Association, which in
1973 named him
humanist of the year. He
is the author of 15 books
and more than 300 arti-
cles.
