Windsor's Jewish com-
munity dates back to 1812
when Moses David of
Montreal opened a fur-
trading station which he
operated until his death in
1814.
In 1880 a trickle of im-
migrants came to Windsor
from Eastern Europe and by
1890 the first synagogue
was organized. Shaar
Hashomayim is descended
from the first synaggoue.
In conjunction with the
jubilee celebration the
congregation will pub-
lish a golden jubilee book
which will tell the history
of the synagogue and its
role in the community.
