Teller Reinstated
After Refusal
to Work Holidays

TORONTO (JTA) — The
Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce has agreed to re-
hire and pay $1,250 to
Helene Cooper, a teller who
lost her job after refusing to
work on the High Holy Days
last year.
A Canadian Human
Rights Commission tri-
bunal was to hear Cooper's
complaint, but a settlement
was reached when the bank
assured the commission its
policy was to accommodate
the religious beliefs of em-
ployes. It pleaded that one of
- its branches had misun-
derstood this policy.
After working for the
bank for two weeks, Cooper
asked for seven days' leave
for the High Holy Days in
October 1978. Her employer
refused the request.

Sinai Evacuees
Compensated

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Knesset Finance Com-
mittee approved an initial
sum of IL 50 million (about
$1.6 million) in compensa-
tion to Israeli families that
have already left Sinai in
the evacuation required by
the terms of the Israeli-
Egyptian peace treaty.
The total cost of evacuat-
ing 1,5-00 families from
Yamit, Ophira and the var-
ious agricultural settle-
ments during the next 21/2
years is estimated at IL 4
billion.
Committee members
were told that each family
will receive IL 2-3 million.
The amount of compensa-
tion is based on three
criteria: length of residency,
size of family and size of
their housing.
