Blackey, a re- tired government social worker and college dean who was instrumental in organizing the Paul Baer- wald School of Social Work at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, died Sept. 18 at age 77 in Pinehurst, N.C. Dr. Blackey, a native of Blackpool, England, re- ceived a master's degree in social work at Smith Col- lege and doctorate at West- ern Reserve University. She went to Israel in 1957 and began a five-year project or- ganizing the Baerwald School. She served as the school's first dean. Joseph H. Adler, retired chief of the Detroit Fire De- partment, died Oct. 1 at age 80. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Adler lived many years in Detroit, prior to retiring to Hollywood, Fla. five years ago. He retired from the fire department in 195.9 after having served it for 41 years. He was a member of the Fireman's Officers Club of Detroit. He leaves his wife, Esther; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Julie) Sparage of Granada Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Joseph (Harriet) Fer- nandez; a sister, Mrs. Elton (Dorothy) McCollum; and six grandchildren. Minnie Hock Minnie G. Hock, a member of Jewish women's organizations, died Oct. 2 at age 82. A native Detroiter, Mrs. Hock was a member of Hadassah and a 50-year member of the Temple Beth El Sisterhood. During World War II she was active in the USO. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Nathan (Bernice) Balaban; a brother, Alex Goldfine of Las Vegas, Nev.; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. Louis Sugarman Attorney. Louis L. Sugarman died Oct. 3 at age 72. Born in New York, Mr. Sugarman lived 60 years in Detroit. He was a member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek and Zeiger Lodge of Bnai Brith. Max Shniderman Robert Nemzin Max Motel Shniderman, owner of Reubin Manufac- turing Co., dress manufac- turers, died Oct. 1 at age 82. Born in Russia, Mr. Shniderman lived 37 years in Detroit. He was retired. He was a member of Sholem Aleichem Institute, vice president of the senior citi- zens cultural club of the Jewish Community Center and a member of Americans for Progressive Israel. A native Detroiter, Mr. Nemzin was a charter member of Bloch Lodge of Bnai Brith and a member of the Jewish War Veterans and the Dry Cleaning Insti- tute of America for 25 years.
